2018 GW/NASP Public Policy Institute: Early Bird Registration Ends 5/28

The 2018 GW/NASP Public Policy Institute early bird registration is fast approaching! Reserve your space now for one of the best professional development values that NASP has to offer.

The theme for 2018 is "Equitable Policies and Practices that Promote Engagement and Success for Diverse Learners." Nationally recognized leaders and speakers in education, psychology, and public policy will address foundations of educational law and policy, grassroots advocacy, and multi-tiered systems and academic and social-emotional learning supports for reaching all students including culturally and linguistically diverse students, early childhood populations, students with disabilities, and students living in rural and urban settings.

The Basic Training (July 16-18) will offer 12 hours of NASP CPD. Some of the featured speakers include:

  • Maria Ferguson, Executive Director of the Center on Education Policy addressing past, present and future trends in federal education policy
  • Judy Elliott, CEO of Edulead and Former Chief Academic Officer of LA Unified School District (CA) and George Batsche, Director of the Institute for School Reform at the University of South Florida addressing how strategies like MTSS, RTI, PBS, and other program supports can help urban schools reach and teach all learners
  • William Gilliam, Yale University Professor and Director of the Edward Zigler Center of Child Development and Social Policy will be addressing policies and practices in early childhood education that increase equity and access to a high-quality education
  • David Bateman, Professor of Educational Leadership and Special Education from Shippensberg University talking about the evolution of a Free Appropriate Public Education (Endrew vs. DCSD)
  • Renee Bradley, Deputy Director of the Research to Practice Division, Office of Special Education Programs, US Department of Education presenting federal programs and supports for students with disabilities
  • Bruce Lesley, President of First Focus providing an overview of the federal budget and how it addresses the needs of students

The Advanced Training (July 16-20) will offer up to 25 hours of NASP CPD. All of the speakers above will be presenting including additional experts such as:

  • Elisabeth Wright Burak, Senior Fellow at the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute, Center for Children and Families will be addressing how access to Medicaid and CHIP funding in schools impacts student engagement for students in poverty
  • Janine Jones, Licensed Psychologist and Professor from the University of Washington, speaking on promoting resilience through a cultural context
  • Lisa Kelly Vance, NASP President-Elect and Professor from University of NE and Kristy Felden, Executive Director of the Sarpy County Head Start program talking about unlocking childhood potential through early intervention programming for children living in poverty
  • A special school showcase provided by Loudon County (VA) School Psychologist Charles Barrett and June Lucas Zillich, Supervisor in the Office of Student and Family Support and Engagement of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MD), featuring programs that help engage culturally and linguistically diverse students and their families for school success
  • Jennifer Brown Learner and Marissa Goldstein, from the ASPEN Institute National Commission on Social Emotional Learning and Academic Development discussing how students' social emotional and academic development can best be supported through a racial equity lens  

On Day 3 of the institute, participants will also enjoy a full-immersion experience on Capitol Hill meeting with Congressional and committee staff and elected officials during the Capitol Hill Day experience.
