Earning CPD for Your Credential

NASP-Approved CPD

Select professional development offerings provide NASP-approved, documented continuing professional development (CPD) credit for maintaining your license or certification, including the Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) credential. If seeking professional development for renewal of your state license or certification, please verify that your state accepts NASP-approved CPD. If you are an NCSP, please view the CPD guidelines for more details on the types of CPD. NASP-approved CPD can be earned by*:

  • In-person attendance of Documented Sessions and Workshops at the NASP Annual Convention
  • Live or on-demand attendance of the NASP Annual Convention’s Virtual Package
  • Live or on-demand attendance of the virtual Advanced Skills Institute
  • In-person attendance of the Public Policy Institute
  • Live or on-demand attendance of webinars in the Online Learning Center
  • Full participation in the virtual Leadership Institute

*This is a non-exhaustive list. Additional opportunities sometimes present themselves throughout the year and are advertised as they become available.

State-Specific Requirements for Claiming NASP-Approved CPD

NASP is aware of several states that have specific requirements to renew their credential. See details below. If your state is not listed below or if you have further questions about whether you can claim credit for attending NASP CPD sessions, contact your state school psychology association or the licensing body in your state. Note that state requirements frequently change, and changes are not always reported to NASP in a timely fashion. While we make every effort to maintain current information, you are responsible for verifying your state credentialing requirements.

Illinois

If you are a school psychologist in Illinois who is employed in an Illinois public, charter, or state operated school for 50% or more FTE you can meet the professional development requirements for license renewal by holding the Nationally Certified School Psychologist credential. If you do not hold the NCSP you will need to receive professional development from providers approved by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). The ISBE does not permit national associations to become state-approved professional development providers. However, Illinois state-approved providers can approve individual sessions from non-approved providers. If you wish to apply NASP CPD toward your Illinois license renewal, you must seek approval from an Illinois state-approved professional development provider prior to registering for or attending an event.

Michigan

If you are a school psychologist in Michigan, you can meet the professional development requirements for renewal by holding the Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) credential. If you do not hold the NCSP, the Michigan Association of School Psychologists will sponsor State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECH) for documented approved CPD obtained at NASP Convention. For other NASP CPD events, you can use your CPD credits toward your NCSP but may not be able to obtain SCECH credit. Contact [email protected] for more information.

Pennsylvania

If you are a school psychologist in Pennsylvania you will need to complete professional development that is approved by Act 48 to maintain your Pennsylvania Department of Education school psychology credential. If you work for a school district or other Act 48 approved provider, your employer may, at their discretion, grant Act 48 hours for completion of NASP continuing professional development.
