Think of this as a deconstructed everything bagel with extra schmear. A little tangy from sour cream, this spread can be used as a dip for pretzels, potato chips, raw vegetables and, yes, bagel chips. But it's just as good on a sandwich — or even a bagel, if you're crazy for everything spice. One thing to note: If you're making it by hand, make sure to keep your cream cheese quite soft. It'll make things a lot easier.

Ingredients

Yield:About 2 cups
  • 2tablespoons dried minced onion
  • 2tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 2tablespoons white sesame seeds
  • 1teaspoon fennel or caraway seeds
  • 1teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1teaspoon flaky salt
  • 8ounces cream cheese, cut into small pieces, at room temperature
  • cups sour cream
  • Crudités, bagel chips, potato chips and-or pretzels, for serving
  • Make ahead: Dip can be made 5 days before serving.
Ingredient Substitution Guide

Preparation

  1. Step 1

In a small bowl, mix together the dried onion, seeds, garlic powder and flaky salt. In a medium bowl, using a whisk or an electric hand mixer, blend together the cream cheese and sour cream until smooth and fluffy. Stir in all but 1 tablespoon of spice mixture.

  2. Step 2

Eat at once, or refrigerate for 15 minutes or up to 5 days for dip to thicken and flavors to meld. Garnish with the remaining 1 tablespoon spice mixture, and serve chips, vegetables or pretzels.

Tip
  • If you're making it by hand, make sure to keep your cream cheese quite soft. It'll make things a lot easier.

I think this would be even easier using Trader Joe's Everything But the Bagel mix instead of buying the seasonings individually.

I suspect that Trader Joe's "Everything But The Bagel" spice mix can be used instead of all the other spices--and then just enhanced to taste. This would then make this recipe super-easy.

Trader Joe’s everything but the bagel is great. And for those of you who don’t want to buy a whole jar—know that everything bagel spice makes deviled eggs AMAZING.

Just buy the Traders Joes, Everything But the Bagel spice-wont regret this purchase, and add to cream cheese and sour cream-I like creme fraiche more.

sure- go buy it. but why not make it yourself and make it your own tailor made recipe? then reuse a jar so there's less landfill. Isn't that what home cooking can be about? Learn a skill, save money, teach someone else about cooking.

Agree deeply, unless one has to purchase all-new jars of spices to get 2T of each one and never will use them again. However, I did a direct taste-test and think this version is better than the TJ's blend. TJ's has 2 kins of sesame seeds but no fennel, which is crucial; also, proportions are different. I used good-quality spices, Maldon salt and toasted the sesame seeds.

Since I already have all of the spices, which are pantry staples, I will be making this, not buying someone else's mix. Some of us like to make our own food and know what's in it.

For those of us for whom these spices aren't pantry staples, I think there's no harm in suggesting the Trader Joe's mix as a good alternative to save money and cut down on possible food waste from purchasing several spices that might not be used again.

Sherrie, looking at the recipe I'd start with 6T and adjust up from there. If you really like fennel or caraway you can add it in. Ingredients: sesame seeds, sea salt flakes, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, black sesame seeds, poppy seeds. There, now we know what's in it.

Betcha this would work fine me with Greek yogurt??

Made this and it was a big hit!! Recommend letting it sit overnight, it wasn't as flavorful right away but got more intense by the next day.

This was a huge hit at our Super Bowl party. Used 6T of TJ’s bagel seasoning and a generous tsp of caraway. Threw in the garlic powder and we were in business! Highly recommend this with bagel chips, but great with crudités as well.

I found the Trade Joes EBTB seasoning to be way too salty in this dip - turned out much better when following the recipe!

Rather than searching for a sub for the sour cream and cream cheese, why not simply sub in low-fat versions of both? Although since it's a dip and not something you eat in large quantities, I think you'd be sacrificing some of the flavor and richness to go low-fat.

I'm happy to know how to make everything bagel seasoning! Looking forward to trying this dip. Thank you.

Made the recipe as written. When I first tasted it, I thought the fennel was a little too strong, but after a couple of days, wow! It's probably my favorite dip of all time!

I used the Trader Joe’s mix but found it way too salty. Next time will formulate according to recipe. Easy and fast - bringing to party with pretzels, chips, cukes, carrots and peppers.

How much of the Trader Joe's mix do you use?

I’m always looking for dips that taste equally yummy with crackers/chips and with veggies. Not all do! This one really does! It was a big hit at my book club yesterday.

Wow, seems to be two very different camps here! I personally agree with those using the pure seeds and spices according to the recipe rather than TJ’s blend (you can entirely control the flavor to your liking this way). The recipe is great. That said, if these ingredients aren’t pantry staples for you and TJ’s blend makes your life easier, go for it! If Ina Garten had written this recipe, she’d probably say “if you don’t have these ingredients laying around, TJ’s spice mix is fine”.

The reason these recipes are important are for those of us who cannot buy the product. I have lived overseas for 22 years in 3 different countries, but there are 'tastes' that I love and miss from my country! Always good to see these substitutes!

I usually add more salt to recipes, but this is a rare instance where I would decrease the salt. Maybe 3/4 tsp? It’s a good dip as written. There’s another everything bagel dip on this site that includes smoked fish, and I like the idea of adding that here.

Substituted Greek Yogurt for the sour cream and it works well!

I made this using Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel spice mix as I had some on hand. As someone had suggested, it was much too salty. I had to make an additional half recipe - from scratch and minus the salt - to mix in to tame the salt.

It is salty if you use Trader Joe's mix, so it is best with vegetables or a plain unsalted cracker, bagel chip, etc.

This is definitely better than TJs mix (as is anything made from scratch). TJs has hot pepper flakes in it which I don’t like.

One thing that would make it extraordinary - if you can find it - is dried black garlic sprinkles. I found a jar at TJ's - but have only seen it that one time.

Use low fat greek yogurt for a fat-free version. I've tried it, and it's very good.

For those using Everything but the Bagel, the spices add up to a scant 1/2 cup in total. No need to measure too carefully.

A useful substitute: Only around Chanukah do I generally have sour cream on hand; the rest of the year, I make cream cheese dips with whole-milk Greek-style yogurt.
