High Tide[1] is a castle situated on Driftmark. It serves as the seat of House Velaryon.
Layout[]
Exterior[]
The island of High Tide is connected to Driftmark by a causeway.[1] On the other side of the causeway lies the port of Spicetown.[2]
Hall of Nine[]
The Hall of Nine.
The Hall of Nine is the main hall of High Tide, housing the Driftwood Throne. It is also used to display the many treasures acquired on Corlys Velaryon's nine voyages, among other exploits such as the War for the Stepstones.[1]

Corlys Velaryon commissioned High Tide's construction to replace Castle Driftmark, the ancestral seat of House Velaryon on the other side of Driftmark.[3]
House of the Dragon: Season 1[]
In 112 AC,[a] Corlys invites Daemon Targaryen to High Tide to convince him to join his war for the Stepstones.[4]
In 116 AC,[b] Viserys I Targaryen visits High Tide to arrange a marriage between his daughter Rhaenyra and Corlys's son Laenor.[1]
In 126 AC,[c] Laena Velaryon's funeral is held at High Tide.[2]
After Corlys returns to the Stepstones to resume his war, High Tide is ruled in his stead by his wife Rhaenys. In 132 AC,[d] the succession to High Tide is called into question when Corlys is reported to have suffered a possibly fatal wound, with Corlys's brother Vaemond disputing the claim of Lucerys Velaryon. King Viserys reaffirms Lucerys's claim and Vaemond is executed by Daemon for slandering Lucerys and Rhaenyra.[5]
Lucerys dies at the start of the Dance of the Dragons, making his younger brother Joffrey the new heir to High Tide.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
High Tide's exterior is depicted by St Michael's Mount, an island-castle in Cornwall.[7]
In the books[]
In Fire & Blood, High Tide is made of the same pale stone used to build the Eyrie. It is connected to mainland Driftmark by a low causeway that is hidden during high tide, hence the name. After concluding his extremely profitable nine voyages, Corlys Velaryon raised High Tide to replace Castle Driftmark, which was grim, damp, and often flooded. He moved both his family and the ancient Driftwood Throne to High Tide, making it the new seat of his House. A nearby fishing village later developed into Spicetown.
