Timothy McDonough

Washington, DC – National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) President and CEO Kara D. Freeman has named Timothy J. McDonough as the organization’s senior vice president for strategic partnerships and communications, effective December 11.

Freeman also announced that Dr. Jim Hundrieser, vice president for consulting and business development, will follow through with his longtime plans to retire from his full-time position. Hundrieser will continue to serve as a senior advisor when McDonough assumes the senior vice president role.

As senior vice president at NACUBO, McDonough will provide executive leadership and strategic direction connecting professional development, business partnerships, NACUBO Consulting, and the organization’s grant-funded projects in ways that best serve the demands of the college finance officers, their team members, and higher education. McDonough also will lead NACUBO’s public affairs, marketing, and communications team.

A recognized leader in higher education with more than 30 years of experience in association executive management, public policy, and strategic communications, McDonough comes to NACUBO from his current position as vice chancellor for communications and marketing at the University System of Maryland (USM).

As USM vice chancellor, McDonough provides executive leadership and strategic positioning on both national and regional issues for the system and its 12 institutions, three regional centers, 162,000 students, and 41,000 faculty and staff. This includes setting direction in marketing and communications and providing counsel on matters of system and higher education policy to the chancellor, system executive leadership, presidents, and the 21-member USM Board of Regents.

Before joining the USM, McDonough served as vice president for government and public affairs at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB), where he directed policy activities, strategic communications, and trustee advocacy. Prior to AGB, he served for nearly 20 years in senior communications and public affairs roles at the American Council on Education (ACE). He also has served as vice president for public affairs at the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) as well as in a variety of advancement and university communications roles at the University of Maryland, College Park.

McDonough earned his bachelor’s degree in government at Georgetown University, and an M.A. in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park.

“Taken together, these changes position NACUBO for future growth and success. Jim has provided us with an excellent foundation, and Tim brings new ideas and expertise to our portfolio,” Freeman said.

“In looking for a leader who could leverage the collective strength of the NACUBO team, I couldn’t think of a person better suited to this role than Tim—he brings a deep knowledge of the key issues in higher education, experience with each institutional sector and level of governance, a wide national network of contacts, and a clear appreciation for the work of NACUBO and its members.

“I am extremely pleased that Jim will remain with us as senior advisor,” Freeman added. “His efforts have greatly enhanced NACUBO’s effectiveness and capacity in business development, and grants—and he will long be known for his work to establish NACUBO Consulting. Jim shared his interest in a well-deserved retirement with NACUBO leaders late last year; we are delighted that he will continue to share his advice and counsel as we move forward.”

“It’s certainly an exciting and challenging time to join NACUBO, as college and university business office leaders are central to almost every critical issue in higher education today, including those related to enrollment and financial aid, infrastructure and research investment, and matters of regulation and enterprise risk,” McDonough said. “I have been privileged to have known every NACUBO president over the last 30 years, and Kara represents precisely the kind of innovative thinking and leadership that will take this important organization to the highest levels. I can’t wait to join her and begin working with the incredible team at NACUBO.”
