Talk about staying power. On April 8, 1966, TIME published one of its most famous covers: “Is God Dead?” More than four decades later, the headline and design are still inspiring homages. The latest comes from New York magazine, which this week poses the question, “Is America Dead?” for a Frank Rich piece on whether the U.S. is really on the decline. We certainly understand the impulse – just last month we channeled that landmark issue for our cover, “How We Die,” in which Joe Klein examined the medical and emotional dilemmas of his parents’ deaths.
