Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber to go on Injured List

The Phillies will be without two key hitters...but the news could have been much worse

Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber suffered injuries in Thursday night’s loss to the Florida Marlins. They will both go on the 10-day Injured List, with Kody Clemens and Johan Rojas replacing them on the active roster:

However, the initial report from Matt Gelb is that neither player’s injury is major:

Per Gelb’s report, Harper has a low-grade hamstring strain:

The initial prognosis for Harper, those sources said, showed a low-grade hamstring strain. Harper could be activated as soon as July 9, but the Phillies could pad his recovery by another 10 days with the All-Star break serving as a natural buffer.

On a personal note, I pulled a hamstring in almost the exact same manner, and I was walking normally in a week. While running at full speed is still not happening ten days after, I will also concede that Bryce Harper may be a slightly better athlete than me.

The prognosis for Schwarber is even better:

Schwarber’s groin strain is considered mild, and he could spend the minimum 10 days on the IL.

This is obvious a setback for the Phillies, but the team has already had key players go down and seen their replacements step up. Edmundo Sosa played at an All-Star level in place of Trea Turner, and Rafael Marchan has put up a more than acceptable .749 OPS since J.T. Realmuto hit the Injured List.

With the team about to enter a difficult stretch of the schedule, the hope is that the rest of the team will be able to similarly step up while their stars are out.
