With the Help of Whales, a Choreographer Falls Into an Abyss
Mayfield Brooks explores grief and decomposition in the hull of a 19th-century cargo ship.

I cover fashion as it is presented as collections on runways from New York to Paris, and how it is adopted as real-world style on streets from Tokyo to Dakar.
I have been photographing and writing for The New York Times since 2020 and have been on staff since 2023.
I began photographing and writing about style on the streets of New York in 2012. Since then, I’ve gone on to photograph hundreds of fashion shows around the world for various publications like GQ, WWD and W Magazine. I have worked with fashion brands including Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Carolina Herrera and Saks Fifth Avenue, as well as many others.
In addition to being a photographer and writer, I’m also a director and won an Emmy in 2021 for a short film about Black surfers at Rockaway Beach.
Like all Times journalists, I share the values and adhere to the standards of integrity outlined in The Times’s Ethical Journalism Handbook. I want to make sure that both my camera and perspective remain fair and empathetic to the people that I photograph and document. There is something quite vulnerable in the way that one chooses to present when they step outside, and when they choose to engage with me. It is incredibly important that I uphold the trust they have put in me and the work I am doing. In return, I hope that the work can do some small good in making the world a more understanding and accepting place for everyone.
