Portrait of Linda Qiu

Linda Qiu

I help readers sort through political spin through research and reporting. My stories focus on talking points that are circulating in policy debates, in campaigns and on social media. I try to provide context and analysis on their level of accuracy.

I have been a fact checker for nearly a decade, covering three presidential races, countless debates in Congress and viral misinformation. I began this work at PolitiFact and joined The Times in 2017.

I also write about food policy and the Agriculture Department — putting to use my bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Chicago. I grew up in China, Oklahoma and California and now live in Washington.

As a Times journalist, I share the values and adhere to the standards of integrity outlined in The Times’s Ethical Journalism handbook. I strongly believe that fact checks should be not only fair but also as transparent as possible, so that readers can see how and why a statement is false, misleading or exaggerated. Whenever feasible, I try to give the speaker the opportunity to provide evidence for a claim. I make it a priority to include links to studies, data, historical documents and news articles so readers can replicate the research. I try to avoid anonymous sources, and I name all consulted experts and their affiliations. I do not belong to a political party, and I don’t make political donations or participate in campaigns.
