Portrait of Jonathan Mahler

Jonathan Mahler

I try to approach every story without preconceptions, and to immerse myself as deeply as I can in the subject matter. I’m drawn to compelling narratives that can be mined for deeper meaning about the current state of our culture or politics.

I wrote my first story for the Times Magazine in 2001 and was a contributing writer at the magazine for many years before joining the Times staff as a media reporter in 2014. I covered the 2016 presidential campaign, then rejoined the magazine as a full-time staff writer. I have written two nonfiction books, “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx Is Burning” and “The Challenge.” I have also worked as a sports columnist for Bloomberg View.

As a Times journalist, I share the values and adhere to the standards of integrity outlined in our Ethical Journalism Handbook. I want all of my work to be accurate and fair. I protect my sources. I do not accept gifts, money or favors from anyone who might figure into my reporting. I do not participate in politics or make political donations. I make every effort to understand issues from multiple angles. When I am working, I always identify myself as a reporter for The Times.
