Jizai okimono (articulated animals) are marvels of Japanese metalworking, created using techniques originally developed to make armor. Measuring more than six feet long, the MFA’s model of a dragon is among the largest in the world, with over 160 articulated joints which allow for its naturalistic movements. Learn about the dragon’s complex construction and the interesting challenges they present for conservators tasked with keeping the dragon flexible.

With Linsly Boyer, associate conservator, Objects Conservation Laboratory.

Free with general admission. No advance registration or tickets required. Talks meet at Sharf Visitor Center.
