UNITED STATES PATENT OFFQEIQE.
FREDERICK H. WAY, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN CHILDRENS CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 133,130, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. WAY, of Brooklyn, county of Kings and'State of New'York, have invented certain Improvements in Childrens Carriages, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
My invention relates to childrens carriages, and has for its object to make the seat of the carriage convertible from an upright to a reclining or horizontal position; and the invention consists in anovel construction, combin ation, and arrangement of parts, as fully hereinafter set forth.
Description of the Drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the body of a childs carriage having my improvement attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same with the seat and back in their normal position, nearly. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section with the seat and back extended, and forming, with the addition of a third piece, the support for a bed, or, if properly upholstered, a couch.
General Description.
- drawn by slots a a in the sides of the carriage,
the ears b, which are attached to it having pins, which work in the slots. This is the most desirable mode of operating the auxiliary piece E, although it may be hinged to the seat and swung out to a horizontal position when required. All these parts move together on the slides D D, the travel of the seat B being arrested when it has moved sufficiently forward by slots in the side pieces G G and stops (1 d on the sides of the carriage. 0n the dash-board of the carriage is a projecting horizontal rail, F,- which receives the edge of the piece E under it, and thereby serves to hold it firmly down on the slides D D.
The parts being thus constructed and arranged, the mode of effecting the alteration will be as follows: The seat, along with the back and auxiliary piece E, when the combination is not in use as a couch, is held stationary by any suitable device, such as a pin through the side piece G into the carriage side, 850.; but when desirable to convert them into a couch or support for a bed the fastening is undone and the seat moved forward, and as the back of the seat, when in use as such, is held" in an inclined position by the stop 0, it will of its own gravity fall, its descent being made gradual by the curved carriage-back, thus avoiding the possibility of a sudden jar. The seat having been brought to its extreme point of travel, the backt) will assume a horizontal position and rest on the slides D D. All that is now necessary is to withdraw the piece E from under the seat B and insert its edge under the rail F, when the seat, having lost its support, falls on the slides D D, and is, therefore, flush or even with both the piece E and back 0, thus forming a perfcctly even horizontal couch or support for a bed.
The piece E and the seat B being beveled on their edges where they coincide, a sudden fall of the scat B on loosening the support of the piece E is obviated, and the bcvels allow the piece E to be more readily returned under the seat.
It will be noticed that the side pieces G G form a prolongation of the carriage sides when the apparatus is used as a bed support, thereby preventing the occupant falling out of the carriage.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the carriage-seat can be converted from a sitting to a recumbent or reclining position while the child is in it without awakening it. The noise and motion of the carriage lull the child to sleep, and, when asleep, the seat is readily converted into a bed without disturbing the child, at a great convenience to the mother or servant.
Claims.
1. The combination, with the carriage-bod y A, of the seat B, back 0, ways D D, and a locking device, all constructed, arranged, 'and operating substantially as described and spec ified.
2. The combination, with the carriage A, seat B, and back 0, of the stop 0, to prevent the back 0 from falling forward, substantially as described.
