Description
WILLIAM MCARTHUR, orv PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 111,365, dated January 31, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED RO'CKING SOFAS AND BEDSTEIADS..
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the isz-unie.
' I, WILLIAM MCAR'IHUR, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State 'of Pennsylvania, have invented a Combined Rocking Sofa, Bedstead, 85e., of which the following is a specilication.
Nature and Object of the Invent/ion.
My invention consists of a sofa provided with rockers and with a hinged back, and being otherwise constructed and arranged, as fully described hereafter, so that it can be converted into a bedstead, cradle, or crib, it being therefore of especial utility as'au article f nursery furniture.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure l is a perspective view of my combined rock ing sofia, bedstead, 85e., as it appears when arranged as a cradle;
Figure 2, a plan view ofthe same, showing in dotted lines the method of adjusting the several part-s to form a bedstead i v Figure 3, an end View of the sofa, lwith the devices employed to prevent it from rocking; and
Figure 4, also an end view, with the' hinged back thrown down, and supported so as to form a bedstead.
General Description.
A represents the seat of the sofa;
B B,'the fixed portions of the arms; and
C, the hack, which is -hinged at its lower edge to the rear of the seat, and retained in the upright position'shown in figs; 1, 2, and 3 by screwsc'c, which are passed through the same into the fixed portions of the arms; or, if desired, spring catches may be used instead of screws.
The sofav is supported upon? four or other suitable number of rockers, D, which .enable it to be used .in the same manner as a rocking-chair.
The sofa can, however, be prevented from rocking by projections b l), which are attached to two or more ot' the rockers, and arranged to be turned downward untill brought in contact with the iioor, as shown inA fig. 3.
In gui-des or ways d d, secured to the under side of the seat A, are arranged to slide a bar, e, and-an open slatted frame, f, hinged to the said bar, two other smaller frames, f f', being also hinged to the `frame f, so that they can be folded in against the-same, and be also-received between the guides beneath the seat of the sofa.
These frames can ne drawn outward from beneath the seat of the sofa until the bar e is arrested by stops arranged on the guides, the` hingedframe f being then turned upward against the'front of the sofa, as shown in fig. l, and thc smaller frames f inward over the top of the cushion g toward the back ot' the sofa, until at right angles with the frame j, on which position they are secured by means of hooks h or other appropriate fastenin gs. AA crib or cradle is thus formed by the frames which can be rocked bya person seated upon the sofa at either side of the same.
fixen the cradle or crib is no longer required the frames can be unhooked and folded and4 pushed back to their origina-l position beneath the seat, in which position they are retained by means of pins t, tig. "2, in sertedthrongh openings in the seat of the sofa and into the frames.
Then the soi'a is to be converted into a bedstead the hinged back. is first unfastened from the fixed arms B, and lowered to thc horizontal position shown in iig. 4, where it is supported by means of two or more hinged legs, j, with which it is provided.
The portions B of the arms of the sofa, which are hinged tothe rear edges of the iixed arms B, and ar` ranged to fit closely against the outside of the latter, are next detached and turned outwardly upon their hinges, as indicated y the arrow and dotted lines in fig. 2, until brought o aposition on line with the xed arms, and directly over Ithe lowered back, to
which they are secured by boltsle'iig. 4,or other suitable fastenings.
A'bed is thusformed with both a head and foot-- board, and if a portion of the bed is to be occupied by an infant the frames f and f can be drawn ont and arranged over the seat, as before described, so as to form a crib.
A drawer, mi, is arranged beneath Athesofa, for the specified.
3. The combination, with the arms B and the hinged arms B', of folding legs j and bolts k, as described..
In testimony whereof I have vsigned my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Witnesses:
War. A. STEEL, F. B. RICHARDS.
