"Harry swung his wand high, but Malfoy had already started on “two”: His spell hit Harry so hard he felt as though he’d been hit over the head with a saucepan."
— Draco Malfoy using this spell on Harry Potter[src]

Everte Statum[4] was the incantation of a charm that caused opponent to fly back several feet, and caused a short sharp pain depending on the strength of the spell, but did not cause any lasting damage.[1][3]

History[]

The effects of this spell

During the 1986–1987 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Ismelda Murk tried to use this spell on Jacob's sibling, but Barnaby Lee jumped in front of the student and selflessly took the hit himself.[5]

During the 1988–1989 school year, Madam Patricia Rakepick, the then Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, taught this spell to her fifth-year students, to teach them both useful and practical, considering how little they had learnt in the subject over previous years.[2]

Draco Malfoy used this spell against Harry Potter during the first and last meeting of the Duelling Club in December 1992, despite being instructed to only use the Disarming Charm.[3]

Practitioners[]

Etymology[]

From Latin everte, meaning "to throw out" and statum, meaning "stand"; also, possibly from statim, meaning "at once" or "immediately". This either implies that the spell would cause the victim to be thrown from their standing position, or that the spell throws the victim abruptly. Both of these descriptions notably coincide with the effect seen in the films.
