Ukraine says Russia has fired five Zircon missiles at Kyiv this year

The sea-based Zircon missiles have a range of 1,000 km and travel at nine times the speed of sound, Russia says. Military analysts have said the missiles' hypersonic speed could mean greatly reduced reaction time for air defences and a capability to attack large, deep and hardened targets.

Vladimir Putin's address to Russia's parliament: Highlights on Ukraine war and military capabilities

In his state-of-the-nation address, President Vladimir Putin reiterated Russia's commitment to the war in Ukraine, highlighting the importance of unity and responsibility among its citizens. He also addressed concerns about an arms race with the West, emphasizing the need to develop the defense-industrial complex efficiently. Putin praised the increased combat readiness of Russia's armed forces and highlighted the use of advanced missile systems, including hypersonic weapons, in the conflict. His speech comes ahead of a presidential election where he is expected to secure another term.

Russia's new hypersonic missile needs more testing before adoption

Russia, China and the United States are in a race to develop hypersonic weapons and Russia has been testing the Zircon since at least 2017, heralding it as a major step forward in its military rivalry with western countries. Last year, Russia's defence ministry said that one of its frigates had practiced launching the missiles in the Atlantic Ocean. Moscow has also said it is equipping new nuclear submarines with Zircons.

Explainer: Why is North Korea testing hypersonic missiles and how do they work?

North Korea has tested a new solid-fuel hypersonic missile with intermediate range, featuring a conical manoeuvrable reentry vehicle (MaRV) warhead. Hypersonic weapons and FOBS become a cause of major concern as they can potentially evade missile shields and early warning systems.

US official tells AP an Israeli-owned ship was targeted in suspected Iranian attack in Indian Ocean

The attack Friday on the CMA CGM Symi comes as global shipping increasingly finds itself targeted in the weekslong war that threatens to become a wider regional conflict — even as a truce has halted fighting and Hamas exchanges hostages for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Russia to equip new nuclear submarines with hypersonic missiles

The sea-based Zircon hypersonic missiles have a range of 900 km (560 miles), and can travel at several times the speed of sound, making it difficult to defend against them. President Vladimir Putin said earlier this year that Russia would start mass supplies of Zircon missiles as part of the country's efforts to boost its nuclear forces.
