You almost forget that British-Malaysian actor Henry Golding isn’t Nick Young, the character from Kevin Kwan’s hilarious novel, and now film, Crazy Rich Asians. At last night’s advance screening at the Whitby Hotel—hosted by Golding, the Cinema Society, and Warner Bros.—the actor looked as effortlessly elegant as his on-screen counterpart in a navy leather biker jacket, striped tee, and tailored trousers. Those who joined the leading man were an equally distinguished crowd including Alina Cho, Angela Bassett, and Wendi Murdoch.

After a brief introduction from Golding and his costar Ronny Chieng (who provided as many laughs before the film as he did acting in it), it was time for the audience to settle in for two hours of fantastical fashion and dreamy locales. Raucous laughter throughout the screening was followed by scintillating chatter afterward, as guests mingled over Champagne and fare inspired by the book.

Crazy Rich Asians opens on August 15 nationwide.
