On the one hand, there’s really no way to talk about this new wrinkle in Game of Thrones Season 5 without referencing a plot from the book (a.k.a. a “spoiler”). On the other hand, this so-called “spoiler” was ruined for most online readers at the end of last season anyway. But just in case you missed all the conversation around who didn’t show up in the finale of Season 4 and want to avoid speculation as to why they may in Season 5, here’s your spoiler warning.
As Game of Thrones drew to a close last year, book readers and spoiler addicts were pretty sure they knew how it would all play out. It would end in screams and tears with Michelle Fairley returning as Lady Stoneheart (a.k.a. zombie Catelyn Stark) to seek revenge on those who had wronged her family. She had to be coming. The cast teased that she was coming. Everything pointed to her coming! But the season finale came and went, and she never came. And, to add insult to injury, everyone began to insist that it would never happen.
But some new information has surfaced to throw fuel back on the speculation fire. Michelle Fairley is now on the IMDB cast list for Game of Thrones Season 5. Don’t believe me? Check for yourself.
She’s not only listed as returning for the fifth season finale, she’s being billed as “Hooded Woman.” Sound familiar?
Now, let’s be completely rational here because there are a number of explanations. First of all, IMDB can and has been wrong in the past. It’s not a free-wheeling Wikipedia where anyone can make changes, but it’s not an unimpeachable source either. Secondly, though the character listing is evocative, it could be Dan Weiss and David Benioff messing with us. (They like doing that sometimes.) We know Season 5 will have flashbacks. Who’s to say this Hooded Woman isn’t part of that?
So that’s the cautious, rational reaction, but here’s my more hopeful take. First of all, many took this Fairley interview with Entertainnment Weekly about Lady Stoneheart’s return to mean the character was cut from the show entirely. But if you look at her wording, it can really go either way.
Fairley’s main point seemed to be that Catelyn is dead. But that’s something we can all agree on. Whether she returns as the walking/murdering dead is the real question.
Secondly, though Lady Stoneheart shows up in the epilogue of the third book (roughly covered in Seasons 3 and 4), she doesn’t really get going until the fourth (roughly covered in Season 5). Podrick Payne and Brienne of Tarth spend much of A Feast for Crows hearing rumors about the trail of dead Frey bodies Lady S and the Brotherhood without Banners have left around the kingdom. (Does it really make sense for the show to have spent so much time in Season 3 on the Brotherhood and Beric Dondarrion’s resurrection powers without intending to bring Catelyn back from the dead?)
So, fine, Lady Stoneheart didn’t fit into the show’s vision for Season 4. I think we can all agree to let that go and take our lumps. As actress Maisie Williams pointed out, the lack of Lady Stoneheart last season provided a nice “shoe is on the other foot” moment for smug book readers.
Does this IMDB entry mean we’ll be spending yet another season just waiting for Michelle Fairley to show up? Unfortunately, yes. Like Pod and Brienne, we’ll be tracking clues all season long. Obsessive speculation is coming.
