The 11 Best Dog Sofa Beds, So Your Dog Can Lounge Like People

Orvis RecoveryZone Couch Dog Bed

Orvis

They might look like miniature couches, but these cute little sofas are actually made for dogs! Dog sofa beds come in a variety of styles to enhance your home decor while providing a comfortable place for your dog to unwind.

When researching the best dog sofa beds, we sought the guidance of Dr. Gail S. Wolfe, DVM, of Okemos, Michigan’s Bennett Road Animal Clinic. “A dog bed should be large enough for the dog to fit into without hanging over it. It should be well constructed so it would be difficult for the dog to destroy, and all materials should be non-toxic," Dr. Wolfe told The Spruce Pets.

What We Like
  • Provides support, comfort, and temperature regulation capabilities

  • Certified to be free of known toxins

  • Option to personalized with pet's name

What We Don't Like
  • Height of five inches might be too high for very small dogs

The Orvis RecoveryZone Couch Dog Bed provides three sides of padded cushioning in addition to a supportive based made with dual-layer foam inside. It's our top dog sofa for most because the design incorporates temperature regulating features, a water-resistant liner, and a machine-washable cover. Plus, Orvis offers repairs should anything happen.

Each RecoveryZone bed has two solid layers inside, four inches of medium-density foam topped with one inch of softer foam. This combination keeps dogs from getting hot while they sleep which is beneficial to optimizing periods of rest and a dog's overall wellbeing. The RecoveryZone beds are manufactured in the United States and certified by the Sustainable Furnishings Council (Certi-PUR) to be free of ozone-depleting chemicals like formaldehyde, lead, and phthalates.

The overall dimensions of each bed size (listed below) are inclusive of the sleeping surface and the bolstered sides. For example, the large size of the couch-style bed is 45 inches by 32 inches with a sleeping surface of 32 inches by 24 inches. We recommend checking both measurements to guide you toward the bed that will work best for your dog.  Regardless of size, the beds have a minimum height of five inches which might be intimidating for very small dogs.

What to Look for in a Dog Sofa Bed

Naturally, dog sofa beds are often chosen because they’re cute, and you’ll want to find one that matches your home’s decor. There are a wide range of bed styles to choose from, including everything from plain options in neutral colors to luxe velvet models in striking hues.

You’ll also want to keep in mind size, surface fabric, and cushion materials when shopping so you can find the best dog sofa bed for your pup.

Size

Like most pet beds, dog sofas beds come in a variety of sizes, ranging from extra-small to extra-large. You’ll want to carefully check the dimensions of the bed, as well as its weight limit, to ensure it will be a comfortable fit for your dog. Further, if your dog likes to stretch out as they sleep, make sure the bed has ample room for them to spread out.

To ensure your dog sofa bed is big enough, measure your dog before you shop.

To find your dog’s length, have them stand up on all four legs. Then measure them lengthwise from the tip of their nose to the top of their tail. To this measurement, add at least 6 to 12 inches to get your ideal length dimension.

For the width of your bed, measure your standing dog from the widest point on one shoulder to the widest point on the other. To this measurement, add the same 6 to 12 inches for the total width dimension.

Material

To create the comfiest nest possible for your pup, it’s important to choose a bed constructed of high quality materials. Aside from having a durable cover with a cozy feel, the inner materials of the bed should be sturdy enough to support your dog’s weight and spinal alignment while remaining soft enough for rest and slumber. Factors like being easy to clean, machine washable, insulating, cooling or moisture wicking are all important to consider, too.

Surface fabrics include:

  • Polyester: Polyester can take many forms for dog sofa beds, from the long faux fur of the Furhaven Calming Cuddler Donut Bolster Dog Bed to the plush polyester blend of the Zipcode Design Howse Dog Sofa.  An extremely popular textile, polyester is derived from petroleum. While some types of polyester-derived fabrics are easy to clean, faux fur and plush covers can be trickier and generally are not machine-washable. It can usually be very insulating as a fiber, and is great for cold nights.
  • Cotton canvas: An excellent choice for washability, cotton canvas is highly durable and great for all types of dog and puppy sofa beds. Usually machine-washable, this fabric can be damaged if the water temperature is set too high. Read labels carefully and always use the mildest chemical-free laundry detergent you can find.
  • Microfiber: Known as a durable, easy-to-clean, and comfortable fabric, microfiber is also moisture-wicking, super soft, and can stand up to tough stains. It’s usually inexpensive to boot.
  • Faux Leather: Any type of synthetic leather that intends to substitute for the real thing. It’s cheaper than actual leather, and is often chosen for ethical reasons. Depending upon its specific constitution, it can be quite durable or may sometimes peel and crack over time. Some forms can be washed on a cold, gentle cycle and air-dried, while others may need to be spot-cleaned with mild soap and water.
  • Vinyl: With its name taken from the full term polyvinylchloride, or PVC, this material is also used as a substitute for leather. It’s created from chlorine and ethylene, and is typically very durable. It’s also usually washable in cold water, on the gentlest cycle, with a mild detergent. Air drying is advised.
  • Microsuede: Another favorite sofa dog bed fabric is microsuede. Made from polyester microfiber, it feels like suede leather but is water-resistant and generally more durable, pliable, and affordable than actual suede. Wash it gently in cold water and hang on the line to dry.

Common cushion fillings

  • Memory Foam: This type of sofa bed cushion allows your dog to be cradled in form-fitting coziness without sinking in so far he can’t get out. It works great for most dogs, especially those who need a little extra cushion due to joint, arthritis, or hip dysplasia problems (like Orthopedic Memory Foam). It can be wiped clean with a gentle solution of half water, half vinegar and air dried, but usually shouldn’t be machine-washed.
  • Shredded Memory Foam: This is even cushier than the original memory foam, as shredded up memory foam is more flexible for a customizable comfort zone. Like memory foam, it usually shouldn’t be machine-washed, but read your label as care for this type of cushion can vary.
  • Polyester Fiberfill (aka Polyfill): This is basically shredded polyester which is conveniently hypoallergenic, soft, pliable, and dense. It’s a little bit like down, but more affordable, and you can toss it in the washing machine on cold or warm on the gentle cycle. Dry on medium heat without dryer sheets.
  • Gel Foam: This is basically like traditional memory foam with gel added for a cooling effect. An ideal material for warm climates, you can wipe this down with a half detergent, half water spray and air dry. Machine washing is not recommended for most varieties of gel foam.
FAQ
  • How do you stop a dog from scratching their dog bed?

Dogs scratch at their beds for several reasons, most often due to instinct or learned behavior from early life with their mothers. Interestingly, some may not even be conscious of the scratching, as it may be a trait passed down from wild ancestors who scratched at dirt and leaves to create comfortable spots for sleeping

Bed scratching behavior can also be territorial, since dogs’ paws (among other body parts) have scent glands for marking territory. This type of scratching occurs primarily in homes with more than one dog or pet to keep other animals from claiming their bed.

Boredom and anxiety may also be factors. Providing your dog with plenty of exercise, attention, food, water, potty breaks, and a variety of high quality toys can help alleviate this.

Previous trauma like abuse, neglect, or being weaned from their mothers too early may influence current dog behavior in accidentally-destructive attempts to calm themselves. Anxiety wraps or products like “thunder shirts” that ‘hug’ your dog when frightened can help soothe them, especially during storms or fireworks. Ensuring a warm, patient and safe environment for them, in addition to bringing their bed closer to yours during sleeping hours may also help alleviate this kind of stress.

Finally, trimming your dog’s nails can cut down on destructive scratching, while purchasing a sturdy dog bed (or one that comes with a durable, replaceable cover) can usually keep it intact longer than cheaper varieties. Experimenting with different bedding textures and fabrics may prove useful too, as some dogs can be destructive to certain types of beds but not others.

  • How do you wash a dog sofa bed?

To wash your dog’s bed, it’s best to vacuum its surface first to remove any excess fur or dirt. If possible, remove its cover and wash it separately—in some cases, the cover is all you’ll need to wash. Carefully check labels to establish whether the bed is machine washable or not. If so, go ahead and toss it in the washing machine, using pet-safe detergent only. No fabric softener or dryer sheets are necessary, and may actually be harmful to your pet. Always use the hottest setting when washing (unless otherwise specified), to ensure lingering bacteria are killed in the wash.

If it’s not machine washable, hand washing is in order. If this isn’t possible at the moment, you can also scrub your dog bed’s surface with baking soda in a pinch to remove odors. Spot cleaning with soapy water or an enzyme cleaner can help remove stains.

No matter how you choose to wash your dog’s bed, always be sure to give it an extra rinse to get all detergent and cleaning chemicals out of the fabric.

This article was written by Camryn Rabideau, a freelance writer and product tester for The Spruce Pets who owns two Golden Retrievers. While researching products to include on this list, she considered factors such as each bed's size, weight limit, step-up distance, and materials—after all, she knows firsthand that certain fabrics don't hold up well against dog claws. She also looked at whether the bed or its cushion was easy to clean, as dog beds often get dirty with frequent use.
