Landon Patterson just received the awesome honor of being crowned her school’s homecoming queen. But what makes this achievement extra special is that she just made history as the first transgender student at her school to take that honor.

Currently a senior at Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Missouri, Landon transitioned into a woman this year. Having been born a boy, Landon says she always felt like she identified with being a girl. Even freshman year, she looked at the homecoming queen and said, “Oh I want to be that girl out there walking.”

In an interview with Fox4KC, Landon said she feels complete after receiving the coveted crown. “To have students and my friends vote for me just makes me feel welcomed and loved for who I am,” she said. “I feel like that princess.”

Landon isn’t the first-ever transgender teen to be named homecoming queen, but she is the first at her school, which makes a huge statement. She told Buzzfeed News that there were a few things said behind her back after she transitioned, but overall, she’s received quite a supportive reception from her classmates. And this honor is proof.

Wearing a gorgeous lace gown and her sparkly crown, Landon shared the inspiring lesson she’s learned along the way. “Be you — life is too short, and you just gotta embrace who you are.”

We couldn’t agree more. Congrats, Landon!
