Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse broke a high temperature record today, on the first day of a heat wave that is expected to intensify this week.

The temperature hit 94 degrees late this afternoon, breaking the June 17 record of 93 degrees. That was set in 1994.

It’s only going to get hotter, the National Weather Service predicts. The forecast for Tuesday is 97 degrees, and for Wednesday and Thursday it’s 96.

The humidity is also expected to surge this week as the heat dome that scorched the Southwest settles into the Northeast. That humidity will make those hot temperatures feel even more brutal. The heat index, a measure of how heat and humidity interact on the human body’s ability to cool off, is projected to be over 100 degrees Tuesday through Thursday -- and approach that on Friday.

Today’s humidity was lower and resulted in a heat index of 95 degrees, just a degree higher than the air temperature.

A heat advisory is in effect through Thursday evening for all of Upstate New York outside the Catskills and Adirondacks.
