Fort Montgomery State Historic Site is located on the west bank of the Hudson River near Bear Mountain in Orange County. Fort Montgomery was a fortification that was built by the Continental Army during the American Revolution. It was one of the first strategic construction projects by the Americans. After its recovery from the bottom of Lake Champlain in 1935, the fifty-four foot long Philadelphia, armed with three cannon and eight swivel guns, was moved to the newly constructed building housing what is now the National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution.
