About this item
- Cold brewed coffee has much less acidity and bitterness which makes it perfect for iced coffee drinks.

I’ve used my vintage (1970’s edition) Filtron system to brew coffee extract for years.
The old Filtron system, when completely assembled was not top heavy, and all parts necessary for the complete process (including bowl for extract) could be safely sat on the counter top.
With the newer filtron – that is not possible – because putting the coffee-extract carafe, under the grounds soaking-basket, would make the entire rig top-heavy and most likely collapsible all over the counter top.
Not willing to give up my cold-water coffee extract, and wanting all parts necessary in one spot at the same time to brew the extract, I bought, and last night tried the Breur system.
I love it. The entire system can safely sit on the counter top, with all parts necessary to complete the entire process – WITHOUT it posing as a tippable hazard.
Once you put the grounds in, you place that device in the extract-collection pitcher, then add water in the top. The whole device can sit on the counter, safely, NOT TOP HEAVY – and when it is time to “pull the plug” and let the extract drain – the pitcher is right there, UNDER the grounds basket device, ready to use.
And the resulting brew (coffee or tea from grounds) is delicious -- no ‘acid’ after taste.
I use roughly 2 oz of extract per 20-oz of water, and it creates a strong cup of coffee (or tea).
By the way, this cold-water extraction system makes the MOST delicious tea extract – try filling the coffee basket with tea leaves, and waiting 24 hours before draining! I use Earl Grey (Twinings).
This unit saves you time, when making coffee extract. It saves time, because it is able to safely sit on the counter top, with all parts necessary to the process in one place, at one time.
With the Bruer unit, and its top water device, it is not necessary to stir the grounds to make sure they are wet properly (as in the Toddy system), and there is no ferreting about to get the extract-carafe UNDER the unit (as in the newer Filtron system), when it is time to drain the grounds. The entire unit can safely on the counter top, until time to drain the extract. It is less time consuming that either of the two other units I mentioned above, for this reason.
I like that the Bruer used glass – it does not absorb stains, smells, nor does it discolor.
Lastly, the packaging it comes in, makes it very easy to store the unit, when you are done using it.
If you like using cold-water coffee (or tea) extract, to make your morning cup – this unit is perfect. It is better than the newer Filtron – as it is safe to have the entire assembled unit on the counter top, while brewing takes place.
As far as taste goes, the Bruer makes a great Coldbrew just like any of the other drip towers. It has been exponentially better than my experience with immersion cold brew systems (Toddy). The clarity of flavor this will provide will knock your socks off. Read the blog and watch videos to learn the ins and outs of the system.
The only reason this isn't a 5 star device, a minor complaint honestly, is the thin glass. You can tell in handling that this is a fragile device. It won't take a beating, HOWEVER, it is definitely not so fragile as to prevent regular usage. On the bright side, they have added a silicon collar to the water pot/coffee bed where it joins the carafe in recent versions of the device. Not only does it look great, but it helps protect both pieces from clanking too much. They've also added a silicon coating to the top of the valve stem which helps gripping it and provides a little cushion for the only other surface in the device you might regularly clank against a glass wall.
I highly recommend this device especially for anyone that may not have the money or counter space for a full tower setup.
Edit: I've been using this almost daily for quite some time now, and as much as I love it, I would still get inconsistent results every 2-3 times. I misplaced the filters, so I improvised and used scissors to cut a brown Chemex filter in to a "circle." I haven't had a bad brew since. The Chemex filters distribute the water around the grounds a lot better than the ones provided. Every brew has turned out perfect.
