These simplehuman trash cans are great. You may have seen reviews of other brands of "step" cans talking about the lid lifting mechanism breaking down. Not these. I've had their 46 Liter Dual Compartment Recycling Can for ten years and I fully expect to get another ten years out of it.In our locality there are three different outside bins that they pick up: trash, recycling, and compost.I was using a Rubbermaid uncovered bin for the recycling, but my dog started getting into it. So I needed something with a cover, and this one is perfect for the job. Our recycling tends to be bulky but light, so it goes in this one. The old dual compartment can gets trash in the large compartment and compost in the small one. I use plastic bags in all three compartments.Having two large cans in the kitchen does take a bit of floor space, but not much more than my old setup with the dual compartment simplehuman and the uncovered Rubbermaid.I previously gave this can a one-star review because of surprisingly bad factory QA, but of course Amazon replaced it right away and the new one is flawless other than a couple of points:I don't like the wheels at the back of the can. Every time I use the foot step, it slides a bit closer to the wall. My old one doesn't have wheels and stays in one place. I may put some glue on the wheel axles to fix this.At first I didn't like the air vents near the bottom of the blue inner compartment. Our local trash/recycling company wants recycling to be unbagged for easier sorting. I'd been thinking to use this without a bag as I did with the old uncovered recycle bin, and I was worried that stray liquids might drip out through those holes into the outer can. But it came with a starter pack of 10 fitted bags, so I started using them, and when I take the inner container out to the big recycle bin, I just turn it upside down and dump out the contents, leaving the bag in place until it gets dirty enough to change. I get a month or two out of each bag this way.Here's a portion of my original more critical review, since the poor QA is still worth noting:Quality control? Who needs it!tl;dr: Major damage occurred at the simplehuman factory before shipping, but simplehuman shipped it anyway.I was a little worried by the multiple reports of these trash bins arriving with dents in them, but figured Amazon would take care of it if it happened, as they always do.simplehuman packages these in double cardboard boxes. The inner box is what you would see in a retail store, and that is shipped to Amazon and then to the customer inside a brown cardboard box with the simplehuman name on it. Amazon does not add a third box, since these double boxes should provide plenty of protection.The item was delivered by Amazon Logistics, and the outer box looked perfect with no sign of shipping damage.Oddly enough, though, the inner retail box was smashed on one corner. This was not shipping damage; it clearly happened at the simplehuman factory before they put the retail box into the shipping box.Then I opened the retail box to find two large and deep scratches on the trash bin's lid.These were not caused by the minor damage on the corner of the retail box. The styrofoam spacer on top of the bin was in perfect condition.So here is what happened: The trash bin lid was scratched (and not just scratched but gouged) at the simplehuman factory. They put it in a retail box regardless, and then smashed a corner of the retail box before putting it in the brown shipping box.Note that in my photo of the lid showing the scratches, the color variations from top to bottom are not a defect, it's just the way the afternoon light was hitting it.
