Theater: ‘Kimberly Akimbo’

“Kimberly Akimbo” won this year’s Tony Award for best musical. Both heartwarming and heartbreaking, the show tells the story of a teenager, played by Victoria Clark, dealing with an age-accelerating disease. I left the theater reminded of an age-old truth: Live fully in each moment, because life is short.

Music: the xx

After listening to a recording of the xx at the Shed’s Sonic Sphere in Hudson Yards, I’ve started re-listening to the band’s 2009 debut album, “xx.” The chill, indie electronic beats are the perfect background soundtrack for when I’m cleaning up my inbox or doing research for an article.

Film: ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’

I’m always in the mood for a rom-com, so I recently watched the 2003 film “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. It was silly and cringey at times, but it captured some of the drama, hilarity and beauty of falling in love in New York City.

Book: ‘Slouching Towards Bethlehem’

I became interested in Joan Didion’s 1968 essay collection after reading “Goodbye to All That” in college. My favorite so far is “On Keeping a Notebook,” which inspired me to jot down notes about my life so I can one day, as Didion puts it, “remember what it was to be me.”

TV: ‘Dark’

This mind-boggling Netflix series begins as a crime thriller set in a German town, but it quickly metastasizes into a story about fate and free will, the secrets we keep and the power of love to transcend time. I’ve been watching with my brother, and after each episode, we come away equally mystified and eager for more.
