Dobbin would add depth to Villa's wide options

Dobbin would add depth to Villa's wide options

Aston Villa have reiterated the need to be intelligent in their transfer strategy this summer and in attempts to both navigate PSR and upgrade the squad, this included cross player transactions between clubs.

Dobbin fulfills the criteria of Villa’s desire to add an archetypal winger this summer while providing scope to allow midfielder Tim Iroegbunam to move in the other direction.

Villa have lacked options out-wide, with Leon Bailey the only traditional winger on the books and Unai Emery’s other attackers more inclined to operate centrally.

Dobbin can play in multiple positions and will strengthen Villa’s depth, which is needed in a frenzied fixture list.

Everton winger Lewis Dobbin has held positive talks over a transfer to Aston Villa.

The 21-year-old made 15 first-team appearances for Sean Dyche’s side last season, but started just one Premier League match. He scored his first Everton goal as a substitute in the 2-0 league victory over Chelsea in December 2023.

Dobbin made his first-team debut for Everton in September 2021 and spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Derby County in League One, where he scored five goals across 54 appearances.

In a separate transaction between the clubs, The Athletic reported earlier this week that Everton are in talks to sign Aston Villa midfielder Tim Iroegbunam.

The UEFA rules that could stop Man United signing Todibo

Manchester United are unlikely to sign Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo this summer due to UEFA rules on multi-club ownership.

United and Nice, the Ligue 1 club owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s company INEOS, have qualified for the Europa League and are waiting to learn whether they will both be allowed to play in the competition next season.

UEFA’s regulations do not allow any organisation or individual to have “decisive influence” over the operations of more than one club in the same competition. Ratcliffe also owns a 27.7 per cent stake in United.

Both clubs had until 3 June to supply evidence to UEFA to demonstrate that they satisfy the rules, and are now awaiting the verdict of an independent panel on the matter.

Todibo was under consideration as a potential transfer target by United, who have prioritised the signing of a centre-back this summer following the departure of Raphael Varane.

But the 24-year-old now appears highly unlikely to make the move to Old Trafford in light of UEFA guidance on multi-club ownership issued last month which warned clubs subject to multi-club ownership tests against such deals.

Canada captain Davies insists no decision on Bayern future until after Copa America

Alphonso Davies insists he will not think about his club future until after this summer's Copa America with Canada.

The 23-year-old will captain Canada at the tournament in the United States, but he also has a big decision to make at club level with his Bayern Munich contract about to enter his final 12 months.

The versatile full-back has been linked with a transfer to Real Madrid, with Bayern keen to avoid the possibility of avoiding him leaving as a free agent next summer. However, Davies has postponed any transfer talk to focus on international football.

"I'm sorry, but I'm focused on my national team to go far in the Copa," Davies told reporters on Wednesday. "I have all my energy here and when this tournament is over, we will see what happens."

Aston Villa have agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign left-back Ian Maatsen.

With a £35million release clause in Maatsen’s contract specific only to Borussia Dortmund and now expired anyway, Villa and Chelsea have compromised on a fee just above that figure. Personal terms are also in place on a six-year contract, which Villa are working to finalise.

Villa manager Unai Emery is a huge admirer of the 22-year-old and wants to recruit him ahead of next season, when the West Midlands side will contest Champions League football for the first time.

Greenwood subject of strong interest from Lazio

Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood is the subject of strong interest from Lazio among a number of clubs as speculation continues over his future.

Greenwood, 22, spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Spanish club Getafe, going on to make 36 appearances across all competitions, scoring 10 goals.

All options remain open for Greenwood with United’s preference a permanent sale although another loan or even a return to training with the club are not being ruled out.

Lazio are one of several clubs interested with Juventus, Napoli — as reported by The Athletic in May — and others in Germany, Spain and Portugal monitoring his situation.

It remains to be seen what United's valuation of Greenwood is with Lazio's record signing in the 20 years of Claudio Lotito's ownership being Vedat Muriqi's arrival from Fenerbahce for €21m in 2020.

Getafe are also interested in Greenwood returning to them on another season-long loan.

Edwards signs new Luton contract

Rob Edwards has signed a new four-year contract at Luton Town.

The former Aston Villa, Wolves and Blackpool defender led Luton to promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2023 before overseeing their top-flight campaign last season.

They were relegated back to the Championship after finishing 18th but Edwards impressed and has earned fresh terms.

“I’m really pleased," said Edwards. “It’s been the best 18 months of my professional career, we’ve had so much fun. There’s been ups and, let’s be honest, downs too. But I feel really excited to extend our stay.

“It was never in doubt, but it’s great that we are all on the same page here and we know where we want to be now we’ve all had a taste of it.

“I feel really motivated to get us going again, and to be honest, I said this after West Ham and I know it’s still quite raw because it doesn’t seem that long ago, but the supporters did their talking for us immediately after that game. From then, all that’s been in my head is ‘Right, we’ve got to repay that’.

“We all know the Championship, what a challenge it is, and yes, it is going to be a really difficult year, but also a really exciting one. I’m just delighted.”

AC Milan to sign Real Madrid's Alex Jimenez on permanent deal

AC Milan have exercised their option to buy Real Madrid full-back Alex Jimenez on a four-year deal with the option of an additional year, with the expectation the contract will eventually be for five years.

The fee will be €5million and includes an option for Real Madrid to buy him back for €9m next summer.

Jimenez, 19, spent last season on loan at Milan, making three appearances in Serie A and six for the under-21s in the UEFA Youth League.

He has represented Spain at under-15, under-17 and — most recently — under-19 level, although he is yet to earn a cap at senior level.

Jimenez will form part of new head coach Paulo Fonesca's Milan squad for the 2024-25 season after the Portuguese was confirmed as Steffi Poli's replacement at San Siro.

Rabiot admits club future uncertain ahead of Juventus contract expiring

Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot admits his future at club level remains uncertain but he is fully focused on playing for France in the European Champoinship.

The 29-year-old has been a regular at Juventus since joining in 2019 but is out of contract at the end of the month and has yet to agree a new deal with the Italian club.

“I thought my future would be settled before the Euros, that’s not the case but that doesn’t worry me," Rabiot has said.

"I am focused on the competition, although of course my agent talks to me but that takes second place. We were supposed to have discussions with Juve at the end of the championship, that didn't happen, and once I arrived with France I wanted to get that out of my head to be 100 per cent focused on the team."

Rabiot added, when asked about the new head coach at Juventus: "I knew Thiago Motta at PSG of course, he did good things in Italy, he's a very good choice for Juve. Will this influence my decision? I do not believe so."

Rabiot started France's opening Euro 2024 victory over Austria on Monday night.

Harrison close to rejoining Everton on loan from Leeds

Jack Harrison is close to joining Everton on another season long loan from Leeds United.

The winger, 27, spent last season at Goodison Park, scoring three goals and assisting the same amount in 29 Premier League appearances.

Although a deal is not done, it is expected that a new loan will not include a loan fee and Everton will cover Harrison’s wages. The player was keen on a return to Merseyside this summer and is under contract with Leeds until 2028.

Former England winger Duggan to leave Everton

Former England winger Duggan to leave Everton

Everton have confirmed that Toni Duggan will leave the club this summer when her current contract expires at the end of the month.

The 32-year-old began her career at the Merseyside club before stints at Manchester City, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

She returned to Everton in 2021 and featured in all but one of the club's Women's Super League (WSL) fixtures that season.

Alan McTavish, Everton Women's chief executive officer, said: "Everyone at Everton thanks Toni for her service and commitment to the club.

“From breaking into the senior team as a 16-year-old to winning the FA Cup, she can be very proud of her contribution to Everton."

Duggan has 79 caps for England and was part of the Lionesses side that finished third in the 2015 Women's World Cup.

She has recently worked as a pundit on women's football for Sky Sports and the BBC, and gave birth to her daughter Luella in March last year.

Trott set to join Copenhagen, West Ham advancing move for Foderingham

West Ham United have agreed to sell goalkeeper Nathan Trott to FC Copenhagen for a fee in the region of £1.5million ($1.9m).

The two clubs have been engaged in talks for the last couple of weeks and the transfer is now at an advanced stage.

Trott, 25, spent last season on loan in Denmark at Vejle Boldklub. The shot-stopper made one senior appearance for West Ham during the 2020-21 season, and also had loans spells at AFC Wimbledon and French side Nancy. His contract with the east London club expires in 2026.

Trott's departure clears the path for Wes Foderingham's transfer from Sheffield United to West Ham. Negotiations for the free transfer are now advancing. The 33-year-old's contract at Bramall Lane officially expires at the end of June.

Foderingham made more than 100 league appearances during his four-year spell at Sheffield United, having joined from Rangers in the summer of 2020.

The former Swindon Town goalkeeper played 30 times in the Premier League last season for Sheffield United, but was unable to prevent the club from suffering relegation back to the Championship.

Newly-appointed West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui wants to sign an experienced third-choice goalkeeper following the release of Joseph Anang, 24. Last season, Alphonse Areola was No 1, with Lukasz Fabianski his understudy.

Marco Rose has signed a new contract with RB Leipzig until 2026.

The German head coach last extended his Leipzig deal in the summer of 2023, with that agreement due to expire next year.

Rose, 47, took over at Leipzig in September 2022, replacing Domenico Tedesco, and has overseen third- and fourth-place Bundesliga finishes.

"I'm happy that we're continuing together," Rose said. "I'm from here and feel at home in the city and the region. It's a lot of fun with my boys, with the staff, with all the employees in the club and of course with our fans."

Girona in advanced talks to sign Abel Ruiz

Carlos Rodrigues/Getty Images

Girona are in advanced negotiations with Braga to sign Spanish striker Abel Ruiz.

The 24-year-old's contract with the Portuguese side is due to expire in 2025, and that has led to the transfer fee being reduced.

Braga sources have indicated that the deal could be sealed within the next 48 hours, and the fee is expected to exceed €8million (£6.7m).

Girona sources, meanwhile, have confirmed that negotiations are ongoing but emphasise that they do not yet consider the deal to be finalised.

The deal for Ruiz has been in the works for some time and faced a potential breakdown a fortnight ago, but negotiations have persisted up to this point.

Abel Ruiz was once touted as a rising star in the Barcelona youth academy and is represented by the legendary David Villa.

Last season, he scored eight goals and assisted three times in 30 Portuguese top flight matches for Braga.

Chelsea's €32.5m bid for Omorodion rejected by Atletico

Chelsea have had a €32.5million (£27.4m) plus add-ons offer rejected for Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion.

The 20-year-old, who joined Atletico from Granada in the summer of 2023, spent last season on loan at Deportivo Alaves.

He is one of a handful of striker targets that the London club are looking at.

Omorodion scored nine goals and provided one assist in 37 games last season, helping Alaves to a 10th-place finish in La Liga.

The Athletic previously reported that Chelsea have an interest in Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran.

A move for former academy striker Dominic Solanke is unlikely, at least for the time being, because of a £65million release clause in his Bournemouth contract.

Chelsea completed the free transfer signing of Tosin Adarabioyo from Fulham earlier this month.
