Yilmaz, at least, appears happy.

Happier than Croatia's Luka Modric, who had to collect his man-of-the-match award after his country were knocked out and received the trophy with a face like stone.

Ferdi Kadioglu's creative influence

Ferdi Kadıoğlu created five chances for his team-mates against Czech Republic tonight.

That figure is a joint record for Turkish players in a European Championship match, alongside Hamit Altıntop against the Czech Republic and Ayhan Akman against Germany at Euro 2008,

Turkey into the knockouts for the first time in 16 years!

Turkey have progressed from the group stage for the first time since Euro 2008.

That year, they got to the semi-finals.

It's the third time they have reached the knockout stages in their sixth European Championship appearance.

The Turkey team from that 3-2 loss against Germany in the last four in 2008, in case anyone was wondering:

Recber Rustu; Sabri Sarioglu, Mehmet Topal, Gokhan Zan, Hakan Balta; Mehmet Aurelio; Colin Kazim-Richards, Hamit Altintop, Ayhan Akman, Ugur Boral; Semih Senturk. Mevlüt Erdinç, Gökdeniz Karadeniz and Tümer Metin came off the bench.

Rustu, Sarioglu, Aurelio, Altintop, Karadeniz? Quintessential Euros names. Plus, of course, Colin Kazim-Richards. Formerly of Bury, Celtic, and Derby County, among many others.

Soucek joins elite club

West Ham's Souček has four goals in his last nine matches for his country, and became the fourth member of their Euro 2024 squad to score a goal at a major tournament, alongside Patrik Schick, Lukas Provod and Tomas Holeš.

Aaaand breathe

Did you enjoy all that as much as I did?

The livewire Galatasaray and Turkey attacker Baris Alper Yilmaz was named player of the match.

UEFA's Technical Observer Panel said: "He was a constant threat in the game, carrying the ball into spaces behind the Czech Republic defence and producing dangerous crosses."

Six-day break for Turkey

Turkish players, coaches and fans now have six days to get over that and get ready for the last 16. They meet Austria in Leipzig on Tuesday.

Ralf Rangnick’s side are maybe the most system-based in the tournament.

Chaos versus the system should be fun.

Czech Republic 1 Turkey 2 – The Briefing

Turkey held their nerve in their final group game in Hamburg to beat the Czech Republic and reach the Euro 2024 knockout stages.

The Czechs knew only a win would secure them a spot in the knockouts while Turkey just needed to avoid defeat. In the end, Vincenzo Montella’s side go through to the last-16 where they will face Austria on July 2 in Leipzig.

The Athletic's writers, Elias Burke and Dermot Corrigan, break down the action. Check out their thoughts below.

Tempers fraying with both sides

Not a surprise maybe that tempers were frayed were on both sides by the end, given all the emotions and drama throughout.

Both the giant Soucek and slender Guler were booked amid the push and shove, with Czech striker Chory shown a red.

Czech captain Tomas Soucek and substitute striker, the 6ft 6ins Tomas Chory, were right in and amongst it at the final whistle, going over to Turkey's players at the final whistle, jabbing fingers and making their point known.

Chory was shown a red card - not sure what for - while Vladimir Coufal and Turkey's Arda Guler were booked.

Guler's team-mates drag him away to celebrate. No point getting caught up in all that when you're going through to the knockouts!

Turkey so dramatic to watch

Turkey are not the best team at this Euros, and their games have not been the highest quality, but they may be the most dramatic.

The early red card should in theory have made this straightforward for them, especially after Calhanoglu made it 1-0, and Guler had an open goal for 2-0. But Montella’s side doesn't seem to do straightforward at all.

Credit to the Czechs who played their full part in the drama, and won’t be happy with the main decisions in the game not going their way.

Turkey were the better team though, and will bring more excitement to the last 16.
