Luke Shaw trained today with his England team-mates but will not feature in their final European Championship group game against Slovenia tomorrow.

Shaw had been training individually as he works his way back to fitness following a hamstring injury sustained in February.

The 28-year-old was included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad despite having not played since then and did not feature in their first two group games at the Euros, the 1-0 win over Serbia and last Thursday’s 1-1 draw against Denmark.

But England confirmed all 26 players in Southgate’s squad — including Shaw — were “involved in today’s (Monday) training session”. Southgate, however, said in his pre-match press conference that Shaw is “not quite ready yet” and therefore unavailable for Tuesday’s clash.

Shaw was given the No 3 shirt in the England squad but Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier, a right-back by trade, has started at left-back for his country at the Euros.

Shaw spoke about his return from injury ahead of the Euros, admitting that he came back “too quick”, leading to him missing the last four months of Manchester United’s season.

“I felt something against Aston Villa and came off at half-time at Villa Park,” Shaw said. “It’s kind of everyone’s fault. Partly my fault, partly medical staff, I think everyone would admit that. I didn’t train the whole week.

“The scan came back and there wasn’t too much there. But I didn’t train all week, then trained the day before the game. If the manager asks me to play, I’m never going to say no. I shouldn’t have played.”

England face Slovenia knowing a win will see them top Group C. A point will be enough to see them qualify for the last 16.
