Newcastle United are in discussions with Everton over a deal for striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
There is no agreement in place and there are a number of moving parts complicating the move.
However, there is a desire to complete a deal and talks have been ongoing for a while.
Newcastle’s interest in Calvert-Lewin under Eddie Howe dates back to the summer of 2022. He is a player the Newcastle manager likes, given his physicality, and is seen as someone who could both play alongside or instead of Alexander Isak.

Both Newcastle and Everton’s summer transfer window plans are complicated by their financial restraints.
Newcastle have a profit and sustainability (PSR) shortfall they must address through player sales by June 30 and The Athletic reported in the DealSheet 19-year-old Yankuba Minteh appears the most likely asset they can offload for a decent return before the end of the month. However, once they are into July, Newcastle have the capacity to spend again, given that 2024-25 represents a fresh 12 months in the three-year rolling PSR cycle.
Everton also have concerns over their compliance with PSR, having breached it in both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. Their preference would be to solve the PSR problem not by selling, nor dropping the asking price, for key players but through other means, such as trading academy prospects. They have already rejected an offer of £35million, plus £8m in add-ons, for defender Jarrod Branthwaite from Manchester United.
Calvert-Lewin joined Everton from Sheffield United in 2016 and the 27-year-old has one year remaining on his existing deal, which was signed in 2020. The Athletic reported in May talks had been opened over a possible extension.
He scored eight goals and provided three assists for Everton in the 2023-24 season, helping the club secure Premier League survival.
Calvert Lewin has suffered from recurring injury problems in the last few years but his 38 appearances in all competitions last campaign was the most he has made in a single season since 2020-21.
Newcastle are in the market for a forward this summer and are long-time admirers of Calvert-Lewin. Callum Wilson, 32, has also entered the final year of his contract and has a poor injury record, with some at Newcastle feeling it is the right time to offload the striker.
