The Formula One-inspired movie starring Hollywood actor Brad Pitt, which Lewis Hamilton has co-produced, will be released next June.

The feature movie, whose title has yet to be confirmed, is being made by Apple Original Films in collaboration with F1. It is being produced by the Top Gun: Maverick and Pirates of the Caribbean director-producer duo of Joseph Kosinski and Jerry Bruckheimer.

The movie’s release date has now been confirmed by the sport’s bosses, despite delays caused by the U.S. actors’ and writers’ strike.

Apple Original Films and F1 released a joint statement to confirm that the film will be released on June 25, 2025, while it will be available in North America two days later.

It read: “Described as ‘a landmark for the sport and cinema’, it has been filmed in real-time during Grands Prix around the world and involving the F1 community, including all 10 teams, the drivers, the FIA and race promoters.

“Production of the movie, which began in 2023, will continue at this summer’s British Grand Prix and at several other races, before concluding at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December.”

Pitt and British actor Damson Idris attended several 2023 F1 races, including the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, to film key scenes.

Pitt, 60, will play the role of a veteran driver, Sonny Hayes, while Idris, 32, will star as his team-mate, Joshua Pearce.

The film is also set to include Oscar-winner Javier Bardem, who was pictured at Silverstone last year with Pitt, and best supporting actress nominee Kerry Condon.

“For someone who hasn’t raced, he’s definitely got a keen eye,” Hamilton said of Pitt last year.

“He loves watching MotoGP, so he’s always been a racing enthusiast. He already had a knack for the lines, and he was fully on it, which was good to see.”

On set for Apple's F1 movie: How Brad Pitt's faux team fit into the British GP

‘An important moment for F1’

Analysis by Luke Smith

Amid the ongoing growth of interest in F1 around the world — particularly in the United States — the step into Hollywood by opening its doors to Apple’s movie is expected to serve as the next big step.

Although there haven’t been any big filming activations at races so far this year, with the next scheduled for July’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone, smaller elements continue to be spotted around the paddock to help film extra scenes. In Japan, groups of fans were given small cardboard cut-outs of Pitt’s face to hold, while crew members wearing APXGP gear pop up from time to time. Filming has also continued to take place away from F1 weekends, including at Silverstone earlier this month when one of the cars developed for the movie took part in a crash scene on the main straight.

This is a project that has all of F1’s might behind it, although the costs involved remain unclear. Last month, Hamilton knocked back reports the budget for the film had gone beyond $300million, which would make it one of the most expensive of all-time, calling them “inaccurate”.

Confirmation of the release date, falling on next year’s Austrian Grand Prix weekend, is an important moment for F1 — even if we’re still lacking a title for the film.
