NHL Mock Draft 2024: After Macklin Celebrini, making selections for all 225 picks

NHL Mock Draft 2024: After Macklin Celebrini, making selections for all 225 picks

Corey Pronman
Jun 19, 2024

Today I attempt the nonsensical: projecting all 225 picks in the 2024 NHL Draft. This is a best-guess attempt based on my evaluations of the prospects, where I think they fit in the draft, and factoring in organizational needs. Team summaries of draft classes are included at the bottom of the article.

First Round

1. San Jose Sharks: Macklin Celebrini, C, Boston University (NCAA (H-EAST))

I’m 99.99 percent sure they’re taking Celebrini. We can move on.

2. Chicago Blackhawks: Artyom Levshunov, D, Michigan State (NCAA (BIG10))

The winds certainly feel like they’re blowing in the direction of Levshunov being the pick here. Teams feel like the Blackhawks are high on Ivan Demidov and Cayden Lindstrom as well, and I don’t think they’ve truly decided who they are taking, but the odds favor the big, dynamic defenseman from Michigan State.

3. Anaheim Ducks: Anton Silayev, D, Nizhny Novgorod (RUSSIA)

Anaheim is one of the most interesting decisions in this draft. If Chicago took someone other than Levshunov, I think they make this decision less stressful for Anaheim, who can take the highly talented defenseman who played in North America. The league thinks they want to get bigger and need defense. That turns us to Silayev. He is big and great. He is also a KHL player. He fits Pat Verbeek’s prototype perfectly, but if they don’t want to go Russian, then you start talking about alternatives like Sam Dickinson or Carter Yakemchuk here and the draft gets interesting. There’s also the matzo ball hanging out there that a Trevor Zegras trade seems increasingly likely. If they moved Zegras for a defenseman it could turn their attention right back up front to players like Lindstrom or Beckett Sennecke.

4. Columbus Blue Jackets: Cayden Lindstrom, C, Medicine Hat (WHL)

I think it’s Lindstrom, Silayev or Sennecke at the Blue Jackets’ pick. Lindstrom got the green light medically from some team doctors following the NHL combine and I think momentum is back in his direction to be a top-five pick. If he’s available, I think he’s going to Columbus.

5. Montreal Canadiens: Ivan Demidov, RW, Ska St. Petersburg Jr. (RUSSIA-JR.)

Like Anaheim at No. 3, Montreal would be under a lot of tension here in this scenario. They want a forward. Demidov is a great forward. He is also an average-sized wing playing in Russia. There are other great alternatives they could turn to, be it Sennecke or Tij Iginla up front or Zeev Buium on defense. I think they pinch their nose and take the dynamic winger but this will be a tough debate for them and it wouldn’t surprise me if they went in a different direction. If Lindstrom got to them at No. 5 it would make their lives a bit easier.

6. Utah: Zeev Buium, D, Denver (NCAA (NCHC))

Utah likes big guys; I don’t think that’s much of a secret. They also have a pressing need for more defense talent, which makes players like Dickinson and Yakemchuk potential targets for them at six. But they also need someone who can run a power play so I can see them looking at Buium as an option at six given that he defends well enough. If they decided to go forward, Sennecke could make sense here too.

7. Ottawa Senators: Beckett Sennecke, RW, Oshawa (OHL)

I think most expect Ottawa to take a defenseman at No. 7 such as Buium, Dickinson or Yakemchuk, but Sennecke’s stock is on a rocket ship right now in the league, and I think they would be hard-pressed to pass on him here given how dynamic a talent he is.

8. Seattle Kraken: Carter Yakemchuk, D, Calgary (WHL)

Most feel like Seattle will target a defenseman here at 8. It’s the most pressing organizational need in a draft full of great blueliners. In this scenario, they have their pick of skilled types in Buium or Zayne Parekh or a big guy like Dickinson or Yakemchuk. They swing on the skill Yakemchuk brings here.

Answering the 2024 NHL Draft's 10 biggest questions

9. Calgary Flames: Sam Dickinson, D, London (OHL)

This will be one of the most interesting decisions in this year’s draft. Tij Iginla fits in this range on talent. There are the obvious connections to the organization. There’s also the fact Calgary has pressing internal needs for centers and especially defense prospects. There are plenty of scouts who are convinced they will take Iginla, and there are many who think they won’t. My guess is the Flames lean more toward a defenseman in this spot, be it Dickinson or Parekh.

10. New Jersey Devils: Tij Iginla, C, Kelowna (WHL)

New Jersey has great young forwards and defensemen, and presuming they keep the pick, they should just take the best asset available. To a lot of scouts that would be either Berkly Catton, Parekh or Iginla at this spot.

11. Buffalo Sabres: Berkly Catton, C, Spokane (WHL)

Buffalo is in quite a situation if the draft unfolds like this, where the best players available are small playmakers in Catton or Konsta Helenius or a PP defenseman like Parekh. They have players who fit those roles, but I would have said the same thing when they picked Zach Benson last year. Catton is the best player at 11, presuming they keep the pick.

12. Philadelphia Flyers: Konsta Helenius, C, Jukurit (FINLAND)

Philadelphia would be in an enviable position if the draft plays out like this. They have a need to add quality young centers and they would line up to get either Catton or Helenius.

13. Minnesota Wild: Zayne Parekh, D, Saginaw (OHL)

Parekh is a name there’s been a lot of discussion about of late. He is the most common name handicapped to fall outside the top 10 among the consensus top prospects. He is very talented, but teams have concerns on how he defends and how his game will translate. At some point you have to take the shot though, and Minnesota does at 13 in this mock.

14. San Jose Sharks: Stian Solberg, D, Valerenga (NORWAY)

Solberg is difficult to project because teams have a wide variance in opinions on him. Some have him rated very highly, while others are wary of jacking him up too high on their lists following a great World Championships. The Sharks need a defenseman at 14 and it feels like it’s going to be either Solberg or Adam Jiricek here.

15. Detroit Red Wings: Michael Hage, C, Chicago (USHL)

Hage’s name is buzzing after he impressed teams a lot in the second half and at the combine. He is very talented with NHL skating and skill and seems like he’s trending to being a top 20 pick. He would provide much-needed skill and scoring to the Red Wings pipeline.

16. St. Louis Blues: Adam Jiricek, D, Plzen (CZECHIA)

Jiricek’s season ended early, but teams still like him a lot and I don’t expect a 6-3 defenseman who can skate and move pucks to last on the board for long. He’d fill a major need for St. Louis.

17. Washington Capitals: Jett Luchanko, C, Guelph (OHL)

Luchanko is well liked in the league, and I think as it stands now there’s a better than 50 percent chance that he’s going to go in the top 20. Ideally Washington would add Solberg or Jiricek here after picking a lot of forwards high, but they could use center depth as well so I could see Luchanko or Hage as their pick.

18. Chicago Blackhawks: Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, RW, Mora (SWEDEN-2)

Chicago jumps at Brandsegg-Nygard getting to 18, adding skill and scoring but also some size and bite to their prospect pool. It feels like they will probably take a forward here if Levshunov goes at No. 2.

Will Cole Eiserman be a draft-day faller? (Jari Pestelacci / GettyImages)

19. Vegas Golden Knights: Cole Eiserman, LW, USA U-18 (NTDP)

Eiserman met privately with teams picking in the top 10 at the combine, but most of the teams I talked to think he’s going to be a draft-day faller. I think 15-25 is his range on draft day. Vegas likes to take shots, and he would be a dice roll on a lot of goal-scoring talent.

20. New York Islanders: Cole Beaudoin, C, Barrie (OHL)

Beaudoin’s stock is high after a great World U18s for Canada where he displayed a highly likable, elite compete style game in front of decision makers. The offense in his game won’t ever wow you, but he looks like an all-day NHL center and at 20 you can’t ask for more than that, especially given the Islanders have very little coming down the middle.

21. Los Angeles Kings: Liam Greentree, RW, Windsor (OHL)

Greentree’s stock is a bit down after he barely played at the 18s, but I still expect a big, highly skilled forward who had the OHL season he did to go in the first round. The Kings may be moving on from Arthur Kaliyev soon and some would argue Greentree is a better version of that player.

22. Nashville Predators: Trevor Connelly, LW, Tri-City (USHL)

Connelly’s landing spot will be very interesting on draft day, and around this range of the draft when the talent drops off is when it will get tempting for teams. Nashville has rolled the dice before on riskier players like Zach L’Heureux and could go that route again at 22.

23. Toronto Maple Leafs: Sacha Boisvert, C, Muskegon (USHL)

Boisvert is well liked in the league as a good-sized center who can skate, score and make plays and I expect him to be a mid-first. He would provide Toronto with some size down the middle in their system.

24. Colorado Avalanche: Julius Miettinen, C, Everett (WHL)

Some eyebrows were raised when Miettinen wasn’t invited to Finland’s U18 team this spring, but I still think the player is generally well liked in the league. He’s a 6-3 center who can skate and has offense and those players don’t last long. He and Calum Ritchie would give Colorado two centers of the future.

25. Ottawa Senators: Eric (EJ) Emery, D, USA U-18 (NTDP)

Emery probably starts getting talked about at this range. Teams don’t see much offense in his game, but he’s a high-end athlete who competes and has the look of a future NHL defenseman. He would fit in nicely with what Ottawa needs.

26. Montreal Canadiens: Egor Surin, C, Yaroslavl Jr. (RUSSIA-JR.)

Surin is a well-liked player because of how hard he plays while having good albeit not amazing pure offensive abilities. I don’t know if Montreal would take two Russians in the first round, but he fits their needs.

27. Carolina Hurricanes: Igor Chernyshov, LW, Dynamo Moscow (RUSSIA)

Chernyshov is a top-20 player in this draft, but I suspect he will slide a bit because he’s a non-dynamic Russian winger. At some point, a team will take a swing on a big guy who can skate and score though and Carolina has shown no hesitation to pick Russians.

28. Calgary Flames: Leo Sahlin Wallenius, D, Vaxjo Jr. (SWEDEN-JR.)

Calgary adds two much-needed defensemen in this class for their pipeline. Sahlin Wallenius is a great skater who can move pucks although he has average size.

29. Dallas Stars: Terik Parascak, RW, Prince George (WHL)

Parascak is a player with a ton of natural skill and offense, but he concerns scouts a bit due to his frame and skating. Dallas took a similar dice roll on Mavrik Bourque and the early returns have been positive.

30. New York Rangers: Dean Letourneau, C, St. Andrew’s College (HIGH-ON)

Despite only playing prep hockey in Ontario this season, it’s becoming increasingly likely that Letourneau is going to be a late first-rounder. He’s so big, he can skate OK, and he has good offensive tools. He is the kind of player the Rangers and a lot of other teams covet.

31. Philadelphia Flyers: Sam O’Reilly, RW, London (OHL)

O’Reilly’s stock is on the rise after a strong playoff and Memorial Cup, and I think there’s a better than 50 percent chance he goes in the top 32. He’s got a lot of traits NHL teams covet, has legit offensive skill, and the London variable doesn’t hurt either.

32. Anaheim Ducks: Charlie Elick, D, Brandon (WHL)

Elick didn’t have the best U18s and concerned some teams with his hockey sense, but he’s so athletic and physical that at some point a team will take him and bet on the highly projectable NHL path. Elick and Silayev would be a lot of size, mobility and toughness added in the same draft.

Second Round

  1. San Jose: Nikita Artamonov, LW, Nizhny Novgorod (RUSSIA)
  2. Chicago: Dominik Badinka, D, Malmo (SWEDEN)

  4. Philadelphia: Linus Eriksson, C, Djurgarden (SWEDEN-2)
