Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says Trent Alexander-Arnold was withdrawn as a precaution after feeling discomfort in his knee during the first half of a 3-1 win over Burnley at Anfield.

Alexander-Arnold was substituted at half-time in what was only his second start in a month since recovering from a small tear in his lateral ligament.

It is feared the right-back could be facing another spell on the sidelines but that will be determined by scans in the next 48 hours.

Asked if Alexander-Arnold had aggravated the same knee, Klopp said: “Yeah. He felt it. It stuck in the grass and we need to make an assessment.”

Expanding further on Alexander-Arnold’s issue, Klopp told Sky Sports: “Same area in the knee. Nothing really bad, but he felt it again and we have to see, we have to assess it.

“Trent said it’s fine, but it’s not fine [because] he feels it so we had to be careful and took him off.”

The continued absence of Conor Bradley, whose father died last week, meant that Alexander Arnold’s withdrawal left Liverpool without a recognised right-back for the second half of Burnley’s visit, with midfield Curtis Jones dropping from midfield into a makeshift back four.

“It was obviously a problem at half-time that we had to take Trent off,” added Klopp. “That was a double problem if you want; we had to take Trent off and we didn’t have a right-back available so we told Curtis what he had to do.

“We changed formation because we had to make it as simple as possible for him. He did exceptionally well. Harvey came on and did very well.

“Burnley still had their moments but once we scored the third one we could’ve scored more. It was a really good result aside from the Trent situation.”

Liverpool were also missing goalkeeper Alisson Becker, defender Joe Gomez and midfielder Ryan Gravenberch all through illness but Klopp is hopeful all three players will be available for next Saturday’s Premier League game away to Brentford.
