Nottingham Forest are working on a deal to appoint Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson in a senior football role.

The Premier League side are in contact with Rangers as they look to entice Wilson back to England.

Wilson, 39, previously worked at Watford, Huddersfield Town and Southampton in senior football roles.

The Scotsman was named as Rangers’ sporting director in October 2019.

Forest tracked Wilson for a period of time before entering negotiations with Scottish counterparts Rangers.

Wilson, who is Forest’s preferred candidate to take up a senior role at the City Ground, is known to have turned down several opportunities to return south in recent seasons but there is confidence he will accept this latest offer.

News of Forest’s move for Wilson comes on the same day Filippo Giraldi left his role as sporting director.

A club statement read on Tuesday: “Nottingham Forest’s sporting director, Filippo Giraldi, has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

“He leaves the club amicably with our best wishes.

“Filippo would like to place on record his thanks to the club and wishes Nottingham Forest best of luck for the future.”

Forest made 22 signings last summer, before sacking head of recruitment George Syrianos and head scout Andy Scott and turning to Giraldi to oversee their recruitment alongside owner Evangelos Marinakis’ son Miltiadis, following a stuttering start to the campaign.

The club added another seven signings in January — Felipe, Danilo, Keylor Navas, Andre Ayew, Gustavo Scarpa, Jonjo Shelvey and Chris Wood — with mixed results.

Forest are 18th in the Premier League with eight games left to play.
