Kylian Mbappe has criticised Paris Saint Germain for not gaining his permission to use an interview with him in a video promoting season tickets for the 2023-24 campaign, adding that the club are not “Kylian Saint Germain”.

The 24-year-old forward provides the voiceover for the promotional video via an interview conducted at the Parc des Princes.

Mbappe claims the interview was framed as a “basic interview at a club marketing day” and that he was not informed about what it would be used for.

“I have just taken part in the viewing of the club’s renewal campaign for the 23/24 season,” Mbappe wrote on his Instagram story. “At no time was I informed of the content of the interview with my interviewer.

“It looked like a basic interview at a club marketing day. I don’t agree with this video posted.

“That’s why I fight for individual image rights. PSG is a big club and a big family, but it is certainly not Kylian Saint-Germain.”

There was an internal approval issue on video content for club season-ticket holders. On Thursday afternoon, PSG held a call with the Mbappe’s entourage to explain the problem and clear up any misunderstandings.

PSG declined to comment when contacted by The Athletic.

Mbappe has previously raised concerns and taken action over image rights issues with the France national team. In March 2022, he led a boycott of certain commercial activities by players who did not want to be associated with certain sectors — such as gambling websites and fast-food chains.

In September, he chose not to participate in a photoshoot with France due to the French Football Federation’s refusal to change the image rights agreement with the players. The FFF subsequently said it would change its image rights agreement with players.

A greater control of his image rights was also part of Real Madrid’s offer to Mbappe last year as they attempted to sign the forward before he committed to PSG for three more years in May 2022.

PSG are next in action on April 8 when they travel to Nice.
