Four-time WNBA champion Seimone Augustus has reached an agreement in principle to return to the Los Angeles Sparks, according to multiple media reports.

Augustus, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, played the first 14 seasons of her career with the Minnesota Lynx. She helped the team to nine postseasons and averaged 16.4 points from 2006-18, with knee surgery cutting her 2019 season short.

The eight-time All-Star averaged 5.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists over 21 games as a reserve in the shortened 2020 season — her first with the Sparks.

What she has left at 36

Charlotte Carroll, staff writer: Augustus gives the Sparks a veteran on a changing roster. How much she has left to give on the court remains to be seen but her years in the league will be a boost for a group that lost franchise player Candace Parker to Chicago. After only averaging 15.8 minutes a game last season, she’s able to give some experienced minutes. After coming off a shortened season before her move to L.A., that alone says she shouldn't be counted out.

What this means for the Sparks

Carroll: In addition to Parker, the Sparks lost Chelsea Gray (an unrestricted free agent to Las Vegas) and Riquna Williams. But the team retained Kristi Toliver, Brittney Sykes, Tierra Ruffin-Pratt and Sydney Wiese along with Nneka Ogwumike (cored), assuming she signs her contract. As a result, the group added Erica Wheeler (UFA from Indiana) and Amanda Zahui B. It’s an experienced and well-balanced group. Next up is a No. 10 pick in the draft.
