KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Rams receiver Allen Robinson will have foot surgery next week, and will miss the rest of the 2022 season, head coach Sean McVay said Sunday after a loss to the Chiefs. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Robinson was limited in practice through the week with an ankle injury. He felt something wrong in his foot after Friday’s practice, and testing revealed a stress fracture.
  • Robinson traveled with the team to Kansas City, where they tried an injection to see if he could push through to play. He ultimately was inactive for the game.
  • Robinson was holding the No. 1 receiver spot with Cooper Kupp on injured reserve following ankle surgery. Kupp’s injury wasn’t necessarily considered season-ending, but it’s unlikely he’ll play again this year at this point.

Backstory

The Rams signed Robinson to a multi-year contract in free agency this spring, with the expectation that he would emerge as a prolific No. 2 to Kupp’s No. 1 in their passing game. But neither their passing game, nor Robinson consistently produced to the level the Rams had hoped. The Rams are 3-8 and haven’t had a productive offense all season, Stafford is sidelined with a neck injury and is in the concussion protocol, and Robinson’s first season with the Rams will end after 10 games. He will finish the year with 33 catches for 339 yards and three touchdowns. — Rodrigue

What this means for the Rams

Without Robinson in the lineup for the remainder of the season, the Rams will depend on third-year receiver Van Jefferson, who also missed the first part of the season while recovering from knee surgery, to emerge as their No. 1 receiver (whose quarterback has yet to be determined).

Jefferson had the Rams’ lone touchdown on Sunday night. Behind Jefferson, the Rams’ viable receivers include Ben Skowronek, Brandon Powell, Tutu Atwell and Lance McCutcheon. — Rodrigue

What they’re saying

“I just have to prepare the best I can,” Jefferson told The Athletic postgame. “It’s tough, it’s tough to lose Allen (and) Coop, we know how important Coop is and how important Allen is. Not just the play of those guys, but the great (people) they are and the great leadership that Coop brings, that Allen brings. It’s tough to see a great pair like that go down. I know how an injury is … I just want to play my role, and do the best I can.”
