Charlton Athletic have parted company with manager Johnnie Jackson after the League One side decided against extending his contract.

The former Charlton captain took over the reins from Nigel Adkins on an interim basis in October before being given the role permanently on December 17.

His deal was set to automatically renew at the end of each of the next two seasons based on on-pitch results.

The 39-year-old led Charlton to 10 wins, four draws and 13 defeats during his time as the permanent manager. His record during his interim spell in charge was far superior with Charlton claiming nine wins from 13 games.

Jackson, who played 279 times for the club and was their assistant manager in the 2019-20 season, led Charlton to 13th place in League One.

Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard has said his side have already started their search for Jackson’s successor.

He said in a club statement: “This decision has been a very difficult one to make, Johnnie has done so much for the club, but I felt the time was right to make the change as we continue our preparations for next season.

“Our search for a new manager has begun. This season wasn’t the season any of us at the club wanted. I have big ambitions for Charlton and it will be important for us to find the right individual that can build on the foundations in place and help us progress on our journey.”
