Maine: New head coach Richard Barron announced his staff on Friday, with the headline being the addition of Edniesha Curry, the only full-time female assistant coach in Division I basketball, according to the school’s news release. Curry served as an assistant player development coach under Barron with the Maine women’s team from 2015-2017. In addition to Curry, Barron also added Kevin Reed and Igor Vrzina to the staff as full-time assistants, with Jason Coleman serving as the team’s director of basketball operations.

Utah State: Craig Smith has parlayed four years of success as head coach at South Dakota into a job he’d long admired from afar — Utah State. He replaces Tim Duryea, who lasted just three seasons after taking over for his former boss, Stew Morrill, who retired in 2015 after 17 seasons, a 402-156 record and eight NCAA Tournament trips. Smith was 79-55 at South Dakota, including 38-26 record in the Summit League. His program comes off consecutive postseason appearances (NIT, CIT). Smith has experience coaching in the Mountain West as he spent five seasons as a Colorado State assistant.

USC Upstate: Dave Dickerson has returned to college basketball after a year away to become the coach at USC Upstate. Dickerson spent this past season as a scout with the Utah Jazz after working as an assistant on Thad Matta’s staff at Ohio State from 2010-2017. The former Maryland player replaces Kyle Perry, who was fired after one season.

Middle Tennessee: New coach Nick McDevett has added Sean Dixon to his staff. Dixon spent the last five years with McDevett at UNC-Asheville, where he was promoted to associate head coach before last season.

Nicholls State: Austin Claunch has moved up one seat on the Nicholls State bench, replacing his former boss Richie Riley, who left earlier this month to take the job at South Alabama. Claunch had been on Riley’s staff for two seasons, and in 2017-18 helped lead the Colonels to their most wins since 1995 (21) and their best Southland Conference record since 1998 (15-3). Before coming to Nicholls State, Claunch was on Brad Brownell’s staff at Clemson. Brownell is starting to develop his own coaching tree; along with Claunch, two more of his former assistants — Rick Ray (Southeast Missouri State) and Earl Grant (College of Charleston) — are head coaches.

Drake: The Bulldogs moved quickly to fill the vacancy left by Niko Medved’s March 22 departure to Colorado State. His replacement is longtime Creighton assistant Darian DeVries, who was hired a week after Medved left. It’s safe to say he’s familiar with the territory he’ll be recruiting. DeVries played high school basketball at Aplington-Parkersburg in Iowa and is a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. From Aplington-Parkersburg, he moved to Northern Iowa, where he was a four-year starter who scored more than 1,000 points in his career. DeVries had been a Creighton assistant since 2001.

Eastern Kentucky: A.W. Hamilton was formally introduced as the Colonels’ coach on March 29. His ascension to a Division I head-coaching job was swift. From 2011 to 2017, he coached Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy, where he was chosen National Prep Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2016. This season, he joined another former Hargrave coach, Kevin Keatts, at N.C. State, where they helped lead the Wolfpack to a 21-12 record and NCAA Tournament berth. Hamilton, a native of Georgetown, Ky., starred at Scott County High School before prepping for a year at Hargrave.

Loyola-Maryland: Multiple outlets are reporting that Loyola-Maryland is set to name Georgia Tech assistant Tavaras Hardy as the school’s next coach. Hardy spent the last two years working under Josh Pastner with the Yellow Jackets and also has previous experience at Georgetown and Northwestern.

Louisville: Former Xavier coach Chris Mack was named Louisville’s coach on Tuesday in a deal that will reportedly pay him roughly $4 million per season over seven years. FanRag Sports reports that Luke Murray and Mike Pegues, who worked under Mack at Xavier last season, are expected to join his staff.

Xavier: With Mack leaving for Louisville, Xavier becomes the top job available . The last two times the Xavier job came open, the school replaced its coach with an in-house candidate — promoting Sean Miller in 2004 and then Mack in 2009 when Miller left for Arizona. Athletic director Greg Christopher has a worthy candidate to go that route in Travis Steele, who has spent the past nine seasons at Xavier and the last two as associate head coach.

Pittsburgh: Jeff Capel is leaving Duke to become the coach at Pittsburgh. Capel, who has been Mike Krzyzewski’s ace recruiter the last seven years, has had previous head coaching positions at Oklahoma (2007-11) and VCU (2003-06). Athletic director Heather Lyke, who came to Pitt a year ago, made the hire to replace Kevin Stallings. Details on Capel’s contract have not been released.

Western Carolina: Mark Prosser, the son of the late Skip Prosser, has been named the coach at Western Carolina. Prosser spent the last six years as an assistant at Winthrop.

Maryland-Eastern Shore: On Tuesday, Maryland Eastern-Shore announced it would not renew the contract of coach Bobby Collins, and in a surprise move said associate head coach Clifford Reed would serve as interim for the 2018-19 season. The school said it will conduct a national search and name a full-time coach following the 2019 season.

Middle Tennessee: The Blue Raiders hired a guy who, like former coach Kermit Davis, just might hang around for a while. Nick McDevett spent 21 years at UNC-Asheville as a player, assistant coach and, finally, as head coach. McDevett was 98-65 in five seasons running the program, and the last three years, he led the Bulldogs to more than 20 wins and a postseason tournament trip.

Georgia: Despite being hired on March 15, Tom Crean has yet to officially hire any staff members. Jonas Hayes, who worked on the previous staff, is expected to be retained, after
Crean and Hayes were seen out recruiting together earlier this week.

Connecticut: Tom Moore will be named an assistant coach on new coach Dan Hurley’s staff at UConn, although the move hasn’t officially been announced. Moore served as an assistant under
Hurley at Rhode Island last season and worked under Jim Calhoun at UConn from 1994-2007.

Colorado State: New coach Niko Medved announced that JR Blount and Ali Farokhmanesh will join his staff. The pair worked under Medved at Drake last season.

Maine: The Black Bears made a surprising move when they hired the school’s former women’s coach Richard Barron to replace Bob Walsh. Barron is not expected to keep any of the
previous staff, with an official announcement on hirings expected to come later this week.

March 26

Tennessee State: The school only needed five days to find a replacement for Dana Ford, who took the top job at Missouri State on March 21. That’s because hiring Brian “Penny” Collins was such a no-brainer. Collins, who comes from Dan Mueller’s staff at Illinois State, played high school and college basketball (Belmont) in Nashville, was the head coach at Columbia State (Tenn.), an assistant under Steve Forbes at East Tennessee State and director of basketball operations at Tennessee State. Collins knows the territory and has already made it clear he wants to recruit heavily in Nashville and the midstate area of Tennessee.
