President Clinton has rejected a clemency plea from the convicted spy Jonathan Pollard despite pleas from Israel for his release, the White House announced today.

Mr. Pollard, a civilian Navy intelligence analyst, pleaded guilty in 1986 to spying for Israel and has served 10 years of a life sentence. The White House said that Mr. Pollard is eligible for parole but that he has not sought release on those grounds.

President Clinton concurred in a recommendation from Attorney General Janet Reno against commuting Mr. Pollard's sentence.
