To the Editor:

Patricia G. Horan's concern over removal of the "classic whirring departure board" in Grand Central Terminal is misplaced (letter, July 23). For decades, arrivals and departures were posted on a large blackboard on the west wall of the "arrival station." Automated boards were recent accretions and served to conceal the beauty of this landmark station.

While I too question some of the changes being wrought in the name of restoration, I shall welcome more efficient arrival and departure boards.

WILLIAM K. GUILD New York, July 23, 1996
