All-Maleeva Semifinal Foiled
When Zina Garrison-Jackson dropped out of the A&P Tennis Classic in Mahwah, N.J., early yesterday, the stage appeared to be set for an all-Maleeva semifinal today. By virtue of Garrison-Jackson's withdrawal because of an Olympic corporate commitment in Atlanta, Maggie Maleeva was guaranteed a spot in the semis. All her older sister Katerina had to do was beat Jane Chi, ranked 202d, in her quarterfinal match.
But there are no sure things at this event, and Chi came from behind to beat Katerina, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Top-seeded Anke Huber, ranked fifth in the world, advanced by beating Amanda Basica, ranked No. 574 in the world, 7-5, 5-7, 6-0. (AP)
MUSTER REACHES SEMIFINALS: Thomas Muster moved into the semifinals of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany, with a 6-2, 6-4 victory yesterday over Francisco Clavet of Spain. Second-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov also won yesterday, beating Felix Mantilla of Spain, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2. (AP)

Clearwater Shoots a 61
Keith Clearwater shot a course-record 11-under-par 61 -- matching the PGA Tour's best score of the year -- to take a one-stroke lead yesterday after the second round of the Deposit Guaranty Classic in Madison, Miss. John Huston also shot a 61 this year, in the Memorial tournament.
Clearwater bogeyed No. 1 on the 7,157-yard Annandale course, then played the final 17 holes in 12 under. He finished with a 20-foot birdie putt on No. 9 to break the course record of 10-under 62 set just 30 minutes earlier by Gil Morgan. Bobby Wadkins was one stroke back at 133 after a 65. Morgan was two back along with Greg Kraft (66), Jeff Julian (67), Dudley Hart (68) and Kirk Triplett (68). (AP)
POWELL FINISHES WELL: Jimmy Powell, 61, eagled the 18th hole yesterday for a seven-under-par 65 and a one-stroke lead over J. C. Snead after the first round of the Burnet Senior Classic in Coon Rapids, Minn. Powell lurked just behind Snead throughout the day before sinking a 20-foot putt on the final hole. It was one of eight eagles on the 6,909-yard Bunker Hills course. Snead also had an eagle, plus seven birdies, to offset three bogeys on his way to a 66. (AP)
