Mike Davis of Alabama hit two free throws with 10 seconds left tonight to halt a U.C.L.A. rally as the Crimson Tide scored a 70-67 upset of the top-ranked Bruins.

Alabama, which never trailed, led by as many as 16 points before the Bruins rallied in the second half.

They pulled even at 67-all on a layup by Michael Holton with 35 seconds to go.

Alabama was stalling for a final shot when Rod Foster intentionally fouled Davis. After Davis's free throws, Foster missed a 15-foot jumper and Alabama got the rebound. The Bruins fouled Buck Johnson, who connected on one free throw for the final margin. Alabama, which won for the 11th time in 17 games, was led by Bobby Lee Hurt, who scored 23 points. Ennis Whealtey added 20. The Bruins, who fell to 13-2, were led by Kenny Fields, with 15 points, and Ralph Jackson, with 14. U.C.L.A.'s previous loss this season was by 80-79 to Maryland in double overtime on Dec. 23. Alabama jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the contest. The Bruins were able to tie it at 16-16, but the Tide responded with 6 straight points and went on to a 35-25 half time lead.

The Tide players wore black patches on their left shoulders in memory of Bear Bryant, the former Alabama football coach who died Wednesday.

Terry Donahue, the U.C.L.A. football coach, led the crowd of 12,574 in a moment of silence before the game.
