Paul M. O'Brien, New York City's third deputy comptroller, died yesterday at his home in West Hempstead, L.I., after a long illness. He was 56 years old.
Mr. O'Brien worked on Comptroller Harrison J. Goldin's 1973 election campaign and later joined the Comptroller's office. He served as public-affairs officer, as special deputy for financial planning and, since May 6, 1978, as third deputy.
Before joining the Comptroller's staff, Mr. O'Brien had been Commerce Commissioner of Nassau County, special assistant to New York City's Fire Commissioner, vice president of Printing Industries of Metropolitan New York and a staff member of the New York State Charter Revision Commission for New York City.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy, and five children, Paul, Raymond, Christine, Mary and David.
