WASHINGTON, March 8 (UPI)—The Senate began heated (debate today on a Democratic bill that would permit eligible, voters nationwide to register by post card for Federal elections. Republicans fear that it is a scheme to swell the ranks of registered Democrats, for the November election.
Senator Sam J. Ervin Jr., Democrat of North Carolina, a member of the Judiciary Committee, which has never reviewed the bill, attacked it as “highly dangerous” and leading to “the greatest kinds of rascality.” He moved to send it to. Judiciary for study.
Sponsored by Senator Gale W. McGee, Democrat of Wyoming, and approved last November by the Senate Post Office and Civil Service Committee, the measure would create a national voter registration administration in the Census Bureau to mail voter registration cards to every household. Eligible voters would’ complete and return the cards to local election officials.
