Of these three stories the first has long been a favorite with Mr. Meredith's admirers. The place of action, The Wells, is easily identified with Bath and the time with the heyday of Beau Nash, whose authority and sagacity are reproduced in Beau Beamish. Of the consistency of Chloe's character there may be two opinions, but to one who has learned to like Meredith's manner of telling a story she soon becomes a fascinating figure.
