Innovation in stability

Solutions for a safer home

At IKEA, we want to create a better everyday life for the many people – and a safer life is a better life. For our storage furniture, this means that they’re as stable as possible when used. That’s why we constantly work to develop various safety solutions.

Designed to meet the US Federal Stability Standard

On April 19, 2023, the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted to adopt ASTM F2057-23 as a mandatory federal safety standard for dressers and other clothing storage furniture. The standard was designed to help reduce the risk of tip-over accidents and sets performance requirements for clothing storage furniture.

When you see this symbol, you’ll know that IKEA clothing storage furniture is designed and tested to meet the new federal safety standard.

IKEA takes the lead to reduce the risk of tip-over

Furniture tipping over is one of the home furnishing industry's most serious safety issues. This is why we constantly work to improve the stability of our storage furniture.

The best way to avoid tipping accidents is to anchor the furniture to the wall, but we also strive to create solutions that make our storage furniture as stable as possible while urging customers to anchor them to the wall.

We’ve created a short video that’ll help explain some of these stability solutions. Watch and learn more!

Innovative stability solutions

All of our products are designed to be beautiful, durable, functional - but above all, safe. We use a variety of stability solutions in the design of our dressers, and when combined with wall-anchoring, help you live a safer life at home.

VIHALS

Anchor and unlock
Our patented stability solution helps reduce the tip-over risk when combined with wall anchoring. When wall-anchored, you can open more than one drawer at a time. All drawers may be opened simultaneously when the chest of drawers is anchored to the wall.

HAUGA

Forward-extended base
To meet the US Federal Stability Standard, HAUGA has been redesigned to include an extended base solution for stability. The extended base, along with wall-anchoring, helps counteract tip-over.
