What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Suicide rates have risen among young people in the United States over the past decade. Mental health problems are on the rise as well, with a higher percentage of teens and young adults experiencing challenges such as anxiety and depression than in years and generations past. A vast majority of teens and young adults attend high school or college, making these institutions important environments for mental health systems change intervention. Outside of school, teens and young adults need support and access to quality information to care for the mental health of themselves and those around them.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We envision a future where:

Every high school and college has a comprehensive system that supports emotional health and reduces the risks of substance abuse and suicide.
All teens and young adults are equipped to navigate mental health challenges, to seek and give help, and emotionally prepared to enter adulthood and fulfill their potential.
Our communities support the emotional well-being and mental health of teens and young adults.
Mental health is recognized as part of general health and wellness and is not associated with shame, secrecy or prejudice.

The Jed Foundation believes in a comprehensive public health approach to promoting mental health and preventing suicide. JED’s programs are grounded in our Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention for Colleges and Universities. This evidence-based model can be used to assess efforts currently being made on campus, identifying existing strengths and areas for improvement.
JED partners with high schools and colleges to assess and strengthen their programs, strategies, and policies to promote student mental health and prevent suicide.

The Jed Foundation has both the human capital and financial resources in place to meet its goals. We have a high-performing, diverse team of staff members with educational backgrounds in nearly 30 different fields of study including public health, medicine, psychology, mental health counseling, higher education administration, social policy, and business. Our staff have held previous roles in many different colleges and universities across the country, as well as many different national and international nonprofit organizations serving the needs of others. We have also continued to grow our revenue over the past several years, which has led to our ability to expand our programs and meet every more ambitious goals. This level of experience and financial support will allow our organization to continue to meet our goals and realize our mission into the future.

JED's mental health campaigns reach over 34 million people.
Over 9 million people are better informed each year because of JED's online resources. More than 350 colleges with over 4.5 million students are JED Campuses, working to improve their mental health, substance abuse and suicide prevention programming.

JED High School launched in 2021 and we are currently serving 20 high schools with 12,849 students.
