Pros
  • Comes with a smoker and powerful side burner
  • Large cooking area
  • Temperature gauges built into the lids and cool-touch handles
Cons
  • Large, heavy and difficult to move

Oklahoma Joe’s Longhorn Combo Grill integrates gas grilling, charcoal grilling and smoking into one robust unit. With its barrel-style charcoal grill and three-burner gas grill positioned side by side, this hybrid appliance offers 1,060 square inches of cooking space, including a smoker box attached to the charcoal chamber.

Thoughtful features like temperature gauges on the lids, cool-touch handles, a convenient 12,000 BTU side burner and a wire shelf for storage cater to the needs of aspiring pitmasters and seasoned cooks alike. There’s also a damper on the charcoal lid to help control temperature while smoking.

“We tested the brand’s portable charcoal grill in our Lab, and it performed well due to its build and ease of use,” says Nicole Papantoniou, Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab. Our experts appreciated that the grill was made of a solid steel with oversized handles that stayed cool during testing.

We expect this Longhorn model to be similarly intuitive to use. “The gas tank is accessible from the front, which is a feature that scores high in our tests,” says Papantoniou. One downside: It doesn’t have much storage space, which lowers its score. We’d also like sturdier wheels on the cart, especially considering its six-foot-wide footprint and 224-pound weight. Customer reviews indicate it’s not easy to move the grill around.

Pros
  • Compact and lightweight design
  • Easy to convert from gas to charcoal
  • Comes with a side burner and work shelf
Cons
  • Unable to use gas and charcoal cooking simultaneously
  • Smaller overall cooking surface

The Char-Broil Gas2Coal Hybrid Grill offers a unique solution for those who desire the versatility of both gas and charcoal cooking. Unlike traditional combo grills with side-by-side cooking surfaces, this model features a single cooking surface that can easily switch from gas to charcoal mode in about a minute. BEST GAS AND CHARCOAL GRILL/GRIDDLE

Blackstone Duo 1819 Griddle and Charcoal Grill Combo

Pros
  • Griddle offers more cooking versatility
  • Heats up evenly
  • Lightweight for portability
Cons
  • Legs don’t fold
  • No lid cover

Blackstone is famous for its range of outdoor griddles, and this combo grill stands out for its innovative design that offers a 12,000 BTU gas griddle on one side and a charcoal grill on the other.

While it lacks a lid for roasting or slow cooking, this grill would be great for hot and fast grilling, like searing steaks or patties over charcoal while simultaneously toasting buns or sauteéing mushrooms and onions on the griddle side. You can also sear over charcoal for flavor and move to the griddle side to finish or use the griddle to fry eggs, bacon or rice.

The charcoal side features an adjustable height grate that can quickly move up or down so you can control the heat during cooking. The removable sliding ashtray and removable grease tray make cleanup a breeze. It also has a side shelf to support a 1-pound propane tank and an automatic igniter for the griddle top.

Blackstone griddles heat up really well and offer consistent cooking results,” says Papantoniou. “The brand's products are typically lightweight, which might not offer a super sturdy build but the tradeoff is portability.” While its non-folding legs may pose challenges for transportation (you’ll need a spacious vehicle to take it tailgating or camping), sturdy wheels and a removable griddle top enhance its convenience.

Pros
  • Cabinet storage looks tidy
  • Can be used as a smoker
  • Easy charcoal temperature control via a crank
Cons
  • Poor assembly instructions

The Royal Gourmet ZH Series offers the versatility of a combo grill with a streamlined cabinet space that keeps grilling tools, charcoal and propane tanks tidy and out of sight for a sleek and integrated look.

The grill offers 592 square inches of cooking grates and 169 square inches of stainless steel warming racks. The gas side has 25,500 BTUs of power. The charcoal firebox features lid-mounted dampers to promote air circulation and maintain heat, making it easy to operate as a smoker. A height-adjustable charcoal pan allows for easy temperature control via a crank.

A grease tray funnels grease and residue into a cup, and an ashtray collects the ashes; both can be removed for hassle-free cleanup. The wagon-style cart includes casters for movability and side tables for workspace. Customers like the grill's quality, saying it's a decent product, even though some comment that the assembly instructions are terrible.

How we test gas and charcoal grills

linebreak

Since 2011, the pros in the Good Housekeeping Institute have meticulously tested over 80 outdoor grills, including gas, charcoal, kamado, pellet and portable models.

To select new grills to evaluate, we conduct thorough research across online platforms and popular retailers. We also closely monitor industry events like CES and the Builder's Show. Additionally, we maintain open communication with brands to stay informed about their latest models and innovations.

a small sampling of the grills we tested

Upon receiving samples for testing, we either assemble the grills ourselves or enlist the help of an external company. While assembling, we take detailed notes on the ease and duration; however, we refrain from assigning scores since many consumers opt for pre-assembled grills, a practice we recommend.

During testing, we focus on assessing performance and user-friendliness. For gas grills, we conduct heat distribution tests using sliced white bread and evaluate the cooking speed of steak and chicken while checking for flare-ups. For charcoal grills, we prioritize ease of use to control for the variability of cooking with charcoal.

Ease of use is gauged based on factors such as clear instructions, labeled parts, assembly simplicity and helpful accessories such as shelves, side tables and built-in thermometers.

Our criteria for selecting which gas and charcoal combo grills to feature include our ease-of-use standards plus the ability to easily switch between gas and charcoal as the fuel source.

What to look for when buying a gas and charcoal combo grill

linebreak

✔️ Type: The most common type of gas and charcoal grill combo is the side-by-side grill, which has separate compartments for charcoal and gas grilling that function independently. Convertible gas and charcoal grills can switch between charcoal and gas grilling configurations via removable trays or burner systems that can be swapped out to accommodate either type of grilling. Both of these styles can be found in the built-in grill category, which is designed to be installed into outdoor kitchen islands for a seamless, integrated look. All types can have smoker options, whether as an offset attachment or the ability to simply add wood chips to the charcoal bed.

✔️ Materials: Opt for a grill constructed with durable materials such as heavy-duty stainless steel and porcelain-covered grill plates for durability and rust resistance.

✔️ Warranty: Reputable manufacturers stand behind their products with robust warranties. Look for a grill backed by a warranty of at least five years that covers essential components like gas burners and ignition systems, which are prone to early wear and tear.

✔️ Accessories: Enhancements like a one-touch ignition system, warming racks, side burners, fold-out side tables and ample utensil storage can elevate your grilling experience.

✔️ Price: As much as possible, prioritize quality over affordability. Budget-friendly combo grills may compromise construction and longevity, leading to premature breakdowns and rusting. Invest in a high-quality grill that you can afford.

Are gas and charcoal combo grills worth it?

linebreak

While combo grills offer the allure of gas and charcoal grilling in one package, they come with trade-offs. To maximize your investment, make sure you will regularly utilize both cooking methods, and weigh the pros and cons before deciding whether this type of grill is right for you.

Pros:

  • You'll get the speed of gas and the smoky taste of charcoal in one appliance.
  • A combo grill is more economical than purchasing separate gas and charcoal grills.
  • You'll conserve space on your porch or patio with one grill instead of two.

Cons:

  • Like nearly any appliance that offers multi-mode cooking, combo grills perform averagely across both methods and excel at neither gas nor charcoal grilling.
  • Combo grills are often larger and bulkier than a single grill of either type, which can potentially pose challenges in smaller outdoor spaces.
