While it's fun to reminisce about family vacations or monumental moments by scrolling through your smartphone's camera roll, there is something extra meaningful when you see those photos in a frame. Digital picture frames in particular make it easy to view selfies, candids and group shots so you can save money on buying multiple traditional frames. Plus, a digital frame makes a great gift for grandparents or a present for the dad in your life.

Our top picks:

Our pros in the Media & Tech Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute have evaluated everything from photo book makers and wedding photo albums to Google's Nest Hub to help readers determine which products are worth giving as a digital gift or incorporating into your home. To find the best digital picture frames, we spent hours researching top-performing frames from brands we have tested in other categories as well as frames customers are raving about in the comments. The Wi-Fi connected frame is the perfect gift as you can upload photos, videos and a meaningful message before the recipient opens their present. Simply add content via the Aura app and use the touch bar to switch photos. It has a freestanding design and a built-in speaker.

One five-star review says, "This frame has brought so much joy; it is a constant source of great memories. I have now gifted three myself and recommended it to my colleagues as great gifts for their families." Note that the frame only has a landscape orientation, and that some online shoppers say they found the set-up to be a little difficult. That said, there can be a learning curve when using a digital picture frame for the first time.

Best Value Digital Picture Frame

NIX 8-Inch Digital Picture Frame

Amazon's Choice with a 4.4-star rating, the NIX frame is a bargain at under $50 with similar features of more expensive frames. Since the frame isn't Wi-Fi connected, you simply insert a USB or SD memory card to display images. You can include both photos and videos in the same slideshow and shuffle the content if you so please. We like that the frame also has a motion sensor to save energy, and that you can mount the frame on the wall or use the included detachable stand to place it on your bookshelf.

One satisfied shopper purchased the frame for their 91-year-old grandmother. "Her apartment is crowded with photo frames of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I was able to load many of the same photos to a flash drive plus digital pics she hadn’t seen in years."

Most Popular Digital Picture Frame

Aura Mason

Mason

While the Mason frame is $50 more expensive than our pick for best overall and slightly smaller in screen size, it's worth the extra money if you want to display photos in portrait and landscape orientations. Plus, it has close to a perfect rating online with over 7,400 customer reviews.

The frame has a higher resolution than the Carver, and you can use smart crop to center content and fill the screen. You'll still use the touch bar to flip to the next photo or adjust the speed of the slideshow. One happy consumer who received the Mason as a gift says they "have loved the ease of uploading/removing photos," adding that "I am now giving one as a gift."

Nixplay is another popular brand that offers good screen size and resolution as well as smart features such as AI driven centering that helps images fill the frame.

It has auto-rotation so you can display images both in portrait and landscape modes, and you can use the Nixplay app to quickly upload photos and share playlists. If you prefer uploading photos via your desktop, Nixplay is compatible with certain photo websites including Google Photos, Dropbox and Facebook. The frame is designed to have an easy three-step set-up so beginners can avoid any tech frustration.

A minimalistic look makes it blend with almost any living room or bedroom aesthetic, and you can choose from four colors. Multiple five-star reviews confirm how easy the frame is to use and while it can be a pricey present, sales make it more affordable.

The Skylight Frame

The Skylight Frame

If more than 3,000 online reviews isn't enough to convince you to try the Skylight Frame, then hear out a GH editor who recently set up the digital picture frame in her living room. "It was easy to upload photos to the frame via the app and I enjoyed rotating and zooming in on images to make them just right," she says.

So far, our editor has used the frame to create a birthday album for her roommate and is excited for birthday guests to "heart" photos they like most. However, she notes that the plug in the back of the frame was difficult to find when connecting the frame to an outlet.

You can invite friends and family to add photos to the frame, both via Skylight's app or email. While the frame has Wi-Fi connectivity (necessary for receiving or uploading new content), you can view images without connection. Its versatility combined with user-friendly set-up makes it great for every generation from teens to grandparents. Five-star reviews call it a "must have" and the "best digital frame I've ever had."

Best Large Digital Picture Frame

Samsung 55-Inch Class Frame Series Smart TV

55-Inch Class Frame Series Smart TV

Our experts got hands-on with Samsung's The Frame TV, which can also function as a digital frame. It has a sleek design and can be set on the included adjustable stand or mounted to your wall to save space.

The frame has an impressive 4K resolution that will let you clearly see darker images on the screen even during the middle of the day, says our tester. It also has anti-reflection technology and a matte finish to help avoid glare. Given the size, this digital frame is the most expensive option in our guide (the largest size is over $3,000!).

Still, you are getting a 2-in-1 tech product since you can easily switch between the likes of Art Mode and Netflix. It may not be the right choice for every lifestyle, but if you're a cinephile and art lover, then the splurge can be worth it.

A 4.4-star rating with online reviews commenting on quality and ease-of-use convinced us to include this touchscreen frame in our guide. One five-star review says "It was the best investment for family pictures." We appreciate the 15-inch screen (larger than other frames of similar price points) and that a hi-res LCD panel helps display crisp images.

It has built-in Wi-Fi and a motion sensor that will turn it on when motion is detected up to 10 feet away from the frame. There is also an option to plug in a external card or flash drive to view your photos in a flash. We wish that the frame had unlimited storage, but we feel confident you will still be able to create meaningful slideshows of weddings, graduations and birthdays with ease.

Best Smart Digital Picture Frame

Amazon Echo Show 8

Echo Show 8

When on sale, this digital frame has even greater value as it can do more than show Amazon photos. On top of displaying images from your camera roll, the Echo can also make video calls and stream your favorite TV show or artist.

Use voice control to update to-do lists and utilize the built-in camera to check in when you're away from home. The additional features may not be for you if you are strictly in search of a digital picture frame, but you'll definitely get the most bang for your buck with this smart device.

It has a 4.7-star rating on Amazon, with happy customer leaving the following review: "Turning the home screen into a digital frame for my favorite photos has brought a personal touch to the device. The adaptive color technology ensures that my cherished memories look stunning, no matter the lighting conditions."

How we chose the best digital picture frames

linebreak

Our tech experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute evaluate everything from high-resolution TVs and tablets to Bluetooth speakers and more to learn which tech gadgets are worth the investment. While we haven't formally tested digital picture frames, we drew from previous expert feedback on photo book maker websites and albums to round up the best digital picture frames.

To determine our top picks, we spent hours researching features of each frame, including screen size, resolution, storage, set-up and additional features like Wi-Fi connectivity and playing music. We also read through hundreds of online customer reviews to narrow down the most user-friendly frames.

What to consider when shopping for a digital picture frame

linebreak

Whether this is your first digital frame or fifth, keep in mind the following things to choose the right frame for your needs and style:

✔️ Screen size: We have included a variety of sizes, ranging from 8-inches to 55-inches, with the majority falling somewhere around 10-inches. Screen size will depend on how much space you have on your wall, TV stand or bedside table, as well as your budget as the larger the screen size, the more expensive a digital frame becomes. Note that a larger frame size doesn't necessarily mean the best of the best — our best overall pick is 10.1-inches!

✔️ Resolution: Similar to size, the higher the resolution, the more money you will spend. In some ways, resolution is a better place to spend money as you want your images to appear crisp on the screen. A resolution of around 1280 x 800 will do the trick, but there are higher quality options that go as high as 4K. But we think a little under 2K is perfect as while a higher a resolution can make your image brighter, it won't, say, turn a blurry image into a clear one.

✔️ Storage: Much like with considering which smartphone or tablet to purchase, you'll want to check how many GBs a digital frame has so you don't run out of space. While a fare amount of options have unlimited storage for photos, there can be less space for videos at around 5 to 8 GB.

✔️ Features: On top of the above things, you may want to consider what other features are important to you, whether that's Wi-Fi connectivity, the ability to play music in the background or anti-reflection technology. The more features, the higher the price tag, but you don't have to spend a fortune to be able to share photos with friends and family or upload videos.
