Robot vacuums can help you extend the time between manual cleaning sessions, but some models still require you to regularly empty their dustbins, making a hands-off chore more hands-on than we would like. Self-emptying models eliminate this need with charging bases that automatically remove the debris from the vacuum and seal it into a larger dustbag, so it needs to be checked on far less often. Depending on usage, you may only have to replace the base’s dust bag a few times a year. Though you'll have to pay extra for this convenience, self-emptying robot vacuums often come packed with other impressive features that make it worth it — some models even double as robot mops.

If you're going to make an investment like this, you want to be sure your choice is worthwhile, and the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care and Cleaning Lab can help. We have been testing floor cleaning devices like the best vacuums, mops, wood floor cleaners and carpet cleaners for over 100 years and have been testing robot vacuums since they were first introduced over 20 years ago. Over the last few years, we have tested 16 of the newest and most readily available models on the market, putting each robot through extensive performance, ease-of-use and maneuverability tests. Here are the self-emptying robot vacuums that came out on top.

Pros
  • Earned the second-highest overall maneuverability and navigation score
  • Base dispenses mix of water and cleaning solution to robot’s cleaning pads
  • Dries mopping pads after cleaning session
Cons
  • Self-empty feature only removed an average of 69% of the debris in the dustbin
  • Had some trouble reaching into corners

When we tested the best full-size vacuum mops, a model from Dreametech earned the title of easiest to maneuver, so we weren't surprised when the brand's L10s Ultra made our list— plus, earned a spot in our Cleaning & Organizing Awards — for its great navigation abilities and obstacle avoidance. It received the second-highest overall maneuverability and navigation score, thanks to its impressive avoidance of small obstacles in our test area. The only issue it had was getting into corners. While it performed well across both bare floors and carpets, this was the only one of the 11 models tested to score higher in our carpet tests than in our bare floor pick-up tests. It senses when it moves from bare floor to carpet, increasing the suction level and raising the mopping pads a few centimeters off the ground.

Inside the base are two water tanks for clean and dirty water and a space for the brand’s floor-cleaning solution, which gets automatically mixed with water and dispensed. After a cleaning session is completed and the onboard dustbin has been emptied, the base washes and dries the robot’s mopping pads. We still recommend you remove the pads (and all other mopping accessories from any robot mop) from the robot when not in use to allow them to remain dry and odor-free. As for the dry debris self-empty feature, it performed just fine, emptying 69% of debris from the onboard dustbin to the base.

Connecting this Dreametech robot to the brand’s app was very easy and our experts found the app intuitive and easy to use. From the app, you can tell the robot when you want a cleaning session to start, adjust water and suction levels, follow the robot’s cleaning pattern and start the auto-emptying process. This robot also has a camera that can be streamed and viewed on a connected smartphone.

Pros
  • Has obstacle detection and avoidance abilities
  • Dock has a HEPA filter
Cons
  • Bagless dustbin may allow particles to become airborne

With their fancy bases and many features, self-emptying robot vacuums can be pretty pricey. The Shark AI Ultra has kept its price low, despite having as many features as some of the more expensive robots.

Unlike some budget robot vacs that have random cleaning patterns, bumping around the room to achieve full coverage, the Shark AI Ultra follows an orderly grid pattern to get the job done. It’s fully capable of mapping too, and its laser navigation also allows it to detect and avoid obstacles, which we found it did quite well when we tested it at home. During our evaluation, we also noticed that it cleaned very thoroughly, removing all of the hard debris applied to the test area and even returning to a spot that it missed. The app allows you to set no-go zones, send the robot to specific areas or set it on a cleaning schedule. Fortunately for those who refuse to download another app, the robot itself has built-in controls to start and end cleaning sessions or return it to the dock. The base has a HEPA filter, but its dustbin is bagless which means some particles could become airborne upon emptying it. The benefit of this is that you don't have to buy replacement dust bags.

Pros
  • Earned the highest overall performance score in our Lab tests
  • Can vacuum and mop simultaneously
  • Detailed graphics depicting setup and maintenance instructions
Cons
  • Pushes small obstacles instead of avoiding them

When we tested a robot from Roborock’s Q series, it earned the highest overall performance score in our Lab tests, picking up an average of 99% of dry debris from hard flooring. It also scored highly in tight corner cleaning, picking up dry debris across bare floors in our obstacle course and picking up dry debris from carpets.

Roborock models are known for the ability to self-clean too. In our tests, the self-emptying feature left the onboard dustbin completely clean after every cleaning session. It also boasts a mop that's equipped with an electronic pump and 30 water flow levels to customize the clean session to your floor types and preferences.

Notably, Roborock also has a very clear and helpful user manual with detailed instructions for setting up the robot for the first time and routine maintenance. Like with many other models, pairing the robot with the accompanying app allows you to set up virtual no-go zones, schedule cleaning sessions and send the vacuum to clean just one zone or room of your home at a time. The Q7 Max+ can also be voice-controlled, but only when paired with an Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri or Google Assistant device.

Best for Pet Hair

iRobot Roomba s9+

Roomba s9+
Credit: iRobot
Pros
  • Dual roller brushes did not trap any faux pet hair in our tests
  • Able to spot-clean through app
Cons
  • Cannot detect obstacles shorter than one inch

iRobot created the first-ever robot vacuum in 2002. The brand was also at the forefront of including room mapping and object avoidance in its models, so it’s no surprise that it would lead by creating a robot vac that is great for pet owners too.

The iRobot s9+ was designed with pets in mind. Its brushes are made of rubber to help prevent pet hair from becoming stuck to them, and the inclusion of the second brush helps to comb fur out of the carpet and up into the vacuum. When we evaluated this vacuum, it cleaned up nearly all of the faux pet hair fibers we applied to test carpets, and none of the hair became caught in the brush rolls. The app allows you to edit the maps the s9+ creates of your home, set cleaning schedules and send the robot out to spot-clean messes as they happen. This model isn’t able to identify or avoid obstacles that are under an inch tall, so if your pet isn’t house-trained yet, you may want to consider one of the other robot vacuums for pets we recommend.

Pros
  • Fluffy brush rolls great for cleaning hardwood floors without damage
  • Dustbin has five-layer filtration
  • Connecting to the app was very easy
Cons
  • Too tall to clean under low furniture
  • Time to complete obstacle course was longer than others

This is one of the most unique robot vacuums our Cleaning Lab has ever put to the test. This 5-inch-tall robot vacuum has five filters, two soft brush rolls and a long list of other notable features. The fluffy brush rolls are ideal for keeping hardwood floors clean without scuffing them. In our tests, the JetBot AI+ flew through our bare floor pick-up tests, cleaning up an average of 97% of the dry debris.

When we switched the robot on, it greeted us with pleasant music and a voice with instructions for setting up the robot’s app. In less than 5 minutes, we were connected and controlling the robot through its app. From the app, you can schedule cleaning sessions, set up virtual no-go zones and send the robot to clean by zone. It also offers some unique features like the ability to set the robot’s voice to one of 14 languages and adjust the size of the obstacles you want the device to avoid.

Because this robot is so tall, it could not clean under our test sofa and struggled to get around the legs of a chair in a corner of our test area. It also took significantly longer to get through our obstacle course (almost 30 minutes during one test run). The robot’s obstacle avoidance caused it to occasionally think there was an obstacle when there wasn't, but when it encountered a real obstacle, it steered clear throughout its entire cleaning task. The JetBot AI+’s self-emptying base was one of the quietest of all the models we tested, and it emptied the robot’s onboard dustbin nearly perfectly each time.

Best for Mopping

ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 Omni Robot Vacuum and Mop Combo

DEEBOT X1 Omni Robot Vacuum and Mop Combo
Pros
  • 4-liter water tanks allow for less frequent filling and draining
  • Great at spotting and avoiding obstacles
Cons
  • Charging base takes up a lot of space

Vacuuming isn’t the only chore that these floor-cleaning robots can help with. Many self-emptying models now come with mopping capabilities. The Ecovacs X1 Omni is a two-in-one robot that proved it can mop floors just as well as it vacuums them.

In our Lab tests, not only was this model one of the best at removing debris from carpeted and bare floors but it was also one of the only robots that successfully lightened tough stains when mopping. Plus, the robot’s base makes mopping fuss-free by washing and drying the mop pads between cleanings, and the clean and dirty water tanks hold up to 4 liters, so you don’t need to worry about draining or refilling them often. We also spent several months testing this model at home, and we were impressed to see that it does a great job maneuvering around furniture and steers clear of obstacles regardless of size. The charging base is pretty large compared to other self-emptying robot vacuums, but we think it’s a small price to pay for the convenience it provides.

How we test self-emptying robot cleaners

line break

The Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab has been testing all kinds of vacuums for over 100 years. To evaluate and find the best self-emptying robot vacs, we subject each model to several performance, maneuverability and ease-of-use tests, collecting hundreds of data points across several testing categories.

oatmeal, orzo, baking soda and sand for bare floor testing of robot vacuums
Jodhaira Rodriguez/ Good Housekeeping

Our performance tests include recording how well each model cleans up a mixture of debris including sand, baking soda, oats and orzo from hard floors and carpet. The onboard dustbin is weighed before the cleaning task and then again afterward to calculate the percentage of the debris the robot vacuum picked up from the testing area. Each robot vacuum's test area is adjusted according to the device's brush width.

Jodhaira Rodriguez/ Good Housekeeping

To replicate the conditions robot vacuums will face inside the home, we build a 107-square-foot, two-room obstacle course with a mixture of hard flooring and carpet. We deposit our dry debris mixture around the room, light lipstick stains and coffee are applied to hard flooring (if a model also has wet mopping capabilities) and debris is deposited in corners and along edges of the rooms. We also evaluate how well each model picks up faux pet hair from a test carpet and avoids small obstacles meant to mimic pet toys and other messes. We see if it can fit under low furniture like sofas and chairs and how well it cleans those areas. Each robot also receives scores for other performance and maneuverability evaluations like how seamlessly it transfers from bare floor to carpets and how well it covers all of the floors in the room.

We also evaluate the self-emptying capabilities of each robot. We added a weighed amount of dry debris to the robot’s dustbin. After the robot was placed back on its charging base and finished its self-emptying process, the onboard dustbin was again weighed to calculate the percentage of the debris that was moved into the charging base. Models that transferred a higher percentage of the dry debris from the onboard dustbin to the charging base dustbin received a higher score.

What to look for when shopping for the best self-emptying robot vacuums

line break

✔️ Combo device vs. two separate robots: Across the board, more brands are releasing combination robots that can both vacuum and mop. These models can cut cleaning time in half and save space at home, as only one charging base is needed. If your home has a lot of carpets, make sure that the combo model you buy has good carpet recognition abilities and can lift the mopping pads high enough off the floor to avoid wetting carpets unnecessarily. If you have the space for it and prefer to have two separate models, consider getting a vacuum and a mop from the same brand that can work together to keep your floors clean. For example, iRobot has its Imprint Link Technology that allows the brand’s Roombas and Braava Jets to communicate with each other and start a mopping task after a vacuuming session is completed.

✔️ Analyze your space: If you have a larger home, you will likely need a robot that has a long-lasting battery and a large dustbin. Most models are now able to pause a cleaning task, recharge and then resume the task where it paused earlier, though charging time for a full battery can be anywhere from 2 to 7 hours. With a self-emptying model, dustbin size is less important as the robot will automatically return to its base to empty when it is full. Another solution is to schedule cleaning tasks for separate rooms in your home on individual days so your robot has a smaller area to cover during each session. All robot vacuums can clean tile and vinyl floors, but if your home has lots of wood flooring, make sure that the model you choose is safe for use on this surface. Fluffy brush rolls and the ability to control the amount of water that is dispensed onto floors are things to look out for.

✔️ Features: The newest robots on the market have a long list of impressive features. Some brands will even release new features through a robot’s app via software updates. Here are some of the most common ones available:

  • App integration: Through apps, many robots allow you to schedule cleaning sessions, track a robot's movement, set up no-go zones and adjust settings like suction power and the amount of water that is used when mopping. If your self-emptying robot has a camera, some apps will allow you to view a live feed as it moves around the home. Without an app, some models may have the ability to establish no-go zones and spot clean but likely will not have many other adjustable features.
  • Mapping capabilities: When cleaning for the first time, most robot vacuums and mops will create a map of your home which allows them to clean faster in the future. Some models can only save one map at a time, while others can save multiple maps, ideal for homes with two or more levels. Mapping capabilities can also be more limited on some models, saving major structural aspects of your home like walls and doorways, but not smaller objects like chairs and dog beds. Through a robot’s connected app, many models also allow you to label objects and designate the area around them as no-go zones to keep your robot away. You may be able to send the robot to clean just one zone or room in your home at a time, like the kitchen after dinner prep.
  • Carpet sensors: Many robots are able to sense the difference between hard floor and carpet, increasing suction to better remove stubborn, embedded dirt. This is especially useful if your robot mops and vacuums in the same session. Look for models that will stop dispensing water when carpets are detected. Note that just one of the self-emptying robots we tested for this story lifted the mopping pad high enough to avoid wetting our test carpets.
  • No-go zones: If you want to keep the robot out of certain areas, make sure the model you purchase allows you to designate areas as no-go zones. Older models work with strips you have to set up around the area you’d like to keep the robot out of, while new robots usually are able to remember areas to stay away from after you’ve designated them as no-go zones through the appliance’s app.
  • Schedule cleaning: One of the greatest strengths of robot vacuums is that they can be made to clean while you are away. Another perk of using your robot vacuum with a connected app is being able to set a cleaning schedule for your robot to follow when you are away from home. For even more customization, look for a model that allows you to set different schedules for every room in your home with individualized suction power settings set for each room.

✔️ Price: Self-emptying robot vacuums can be pretty pricey. Models with fewer features and older releases are often less expensive than the newest models on the market. One brand we tested has a trade-in program that provides you with credits to purchase a new model from the brand in exchange for your old robot. You can find models for as low as $20 on retailers like Amazon, but we don’t recommend these as they will likely not perform well.

Are self-emptying robot vacuums worth it?

line break

We think so! None of the robot vacuums, robot mops or combo vacuum mops we’ve tested will replace a full-size vacuum and mop, but they will keep floors cleaner in between major floor cleaning tasks. When it is finally time to pull out your favorite manual vacuum, they can also reduce the amount of time it takes to whip your floors back into shape.

A robot vacuum may be especially helpful if you have allergies. "All types of vacuum cleaners can result in particles and allergens being thrown up into the breathing zone... [An] added benefit of a robotic vacuum cleaner is that if you are particularly sensitive to dust and allergens, you can vacuum while not even being in the room," says Dr. Gráinne Cunniffe, Science Lead, Allergy Standards Ltd and Principal Investigator at the iAIR Institute. Because they eliminate the chore of emptying the robot's dustbin after every cycle, self-emptying models can be even better.

Why are robot vacuums so expensive?

linebreak

If you have a busy schedule, limited mobility or just dislike having to clean often, a robot vacuum can be a worthwhile investment. But it's one that could cost you upwards of $800. Some of the newest models with tons of bells and whistles cost even more — $1,000 and up.

But you know what they say: You get what you pay for. Today's models don't just rely on the old bump-and-go method — haphazardly changing direction once it hits an obstacle — which is common among inexpensive models under $500. The special features on newer models such as cameras, advanced navigation, obstacle avoidance and self-emptying docks all add to the price.

These high-end features are valuable since these models offer a more thorough clean. They have high suction power, and their detailed mapping and navigation abilities make them less likely to miss spots. They also help protect other investments in your home, like furniture legs or trim and molding. Importantly, they're also less likely to encounter and spread any obstacles, including the dreaded pet mess.

How often do robot vacuums need to be emptied?

line break

Typically, robot vacuums should be emptied after every cleaning session. Because self-emptying units do this part for you, the onboard dust bin on self-emptying robots does not need to be emptied at all, but the charging base where dust and debris are collected usually needs to be emptied or have a bag replaced every 60 to 90 days. Of course, if your robot is picking up more debris than usual, it will likely require more frequent emptying than that.
