Arab Attitudes towards the Gaza War

  • Palestine, MENA, 2023

A Survey in Gaza, Westbank, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt

Key Findings

The 7th of October Hamas attack on Israel is supported by majorities in all of the Arab regions surveyed. Hamas is viewed positively by majorities in almost all of the surveyed regions. In Gaza, 48 % of the population sees Hamas having a favorable effect there. The United States’s image in the six Arab countries/regions surveyed is being significantly damaged by perceived U.S. support for Israeli actions in Gaza. Negative attitudes toward the West are pronounced, while more positive attitudes toward Western adversaries are helped by the conflict. The Gaza conflict could be radicalizing segments of Arab populations that could further acerbate threats from violent extremism going forward.
